Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make a water bowline knot. Easy step by step instructions for tying a water bowline knot in this simple guide.
The water bowline is knot #1012 in The Ashley Book of Knots (ABoK). It is a sailing or boating knot, which makes a secure eye or loop in the end of a rope. Ashley recommended its use if a bowline were to be dragged through water. Wet knots are apt to slip or jam and the extra half hitch lessens this tendency. It is very similar to the double bowline, which puts the running end through a round turn. The water bowline puts it through a clove hitch, which adds to its security and strength. Both are more secure than the regular bowline, which can slip in modern synthetic ropes and can shake loose when the knot is not under tension.
Uses:
When using slippery rope in which the simple bowline would slip. It is also useful in conditions of cyclic loading (loading and unloading), where the regular bowline has a tendency to shake itself undone.
Advantages:
Relatively easy to tie and inspect. Remains stable under various loading conditions. More secure than the regular bowline.
Disadvantages:
Takes longer to tie and untie than the regular bowline.
