In my opinion, making power is all about thought process. I saw a video the other day where they were talking about how they did an oil change on a motor on the dyno, and it lost 40 something horsepower. I disagree, I say they increased the losses by 40 something horsepower. The cylinders were making exactly the same power. They hadn't changed the tune up, it was only a few minutes since the last run, so it is unlikely that the air has changed to any real degree, so the losses have changed. In my opinion, you can only make so much cylinder pressure, so what you see at the back of the crankshaft is a direct reflection on your thought processes. If you don't think good, your numbers aren't going to be good (unless you're lucky). Great video Ben, regards Greg

Racing @ Barona Dragstrip in San Diego does the same thing. Summertime is crazy and you make a pass early morning and by noontime you have lost half a second if you do not anticipate the timing and fuel! The air gets super thin as it gets hotter by as much as minimum 30* starting at 70* ends up as much as 115* and everybody takes a performance dive. Watch those that only lose only half as much and those guys are the ones to listen to.

Good info! When putting together my street BBC I used a degree wheel to find the dead middle of the heel of the cam lobe and adjusted my valve at that point. It took me a half hour to figure out how to do it all and scratch out some notes. Your method looks pretty close to the middle of the heel and close enough for me! Wish I would have had this specific info when putting the engine together....but I got it next time. Thanks!

I agree with much of what you have to say here, Ben. Exceptions... Short block. Breakaway torque race assy. at half-value compared to O.E. Then put 400-1200 lb. race valve springs on top. THEN compare the assembled long-block rotating resistance with O.E. 200-300 lb. springs installed. Not to mention dynamic C/R differences Also generally speaking, engines lacking a priority-main feed oil system require additional oil pressure and system modifications for race applications. Keep up the good work Ben!
@benalamedaracing2765

Bill, thanks for your insight and I eliminated the valvetrain and mainly focused on the break turn effort of the rotating assembly. This said, i have also not really focused on how much a descending lobe does to help overwhelm the one lifter trying to go up the lobe and helps it climb by the opposite action of the lifter coming from max lift. I noticed this years ago when I had a single lifter left @ max lift by a friend releasing all the others except this one! When he turned the crank it snapped really hard and did a 1 complete rotation of the crank and pistons! So we experimented with one lifter going up the lobe and one coming down and the torque was about equalized and did not feel very much! That was a revelation to me and apply this to the other 14 that would really be interesting...So wonder does it really go higher or equalizes??? I got to go to a Spintron and see the difference. This one was 350# @ the seat and 950# at max lift so it had lots of energy. But rather easy to turn which surprised me.

@@benalamedaracing2765 Ben , thank you for your detailed response. In days past (1970's), we ran "Vasco-Jet" springs in our Pro-Stock/Comp. Clevelands. Max pressures were around 750- 800#. Many competitors ran spring pressures near 900#. They were usually breaking springs. We weren't and we were pretty successful to boot. We would normally shim the springs between rounds and change springs after each event. On street driven n/a high performance cars we would run "Oteva" Swedish steel springs of various pressures depending on application. These springs lost little height over time and would last forever. Our philosophy with valve springs in general was always to use the best quality but lowest pressure springs that would get the job done. Much like reciprocating assembly parasitic loss/gain and heavier oils vs. lighter oils, "free" , freed-up power is available if you make the right choices. "Torque gets you going and Horsepower keeps you going." Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience.

There's a street in my city named after your family, and I'm not talking about no residential small street on the outskirts of my city either! I have a question in relation to your family and the Coors racing family. Are the families closely tied together or the opposite with no relation at all in racing? The reason I ask is because the only family in our city who has a bigger street named after them is the Coors family taking up one of the main roadways stretching from end to end. They also have their family racing museum located here in my city, that being Albuquerque. Thanks for your time your content is jam packed with jems and your channel is definitely The hidden Jem in this YT racing community!

Hi Ben. Thank you Sir for your time. I am building a 5.0 HO 1990 yr 302 small block. I am using ported E7TE heads. I want to go with the 289 rods with a 302 piston combination. Can you make a piston suggestion for me? I may just have to shave 25k off the top of a 302 piston. I was looking for a dome piston that may work. Thank you Sir.

I'm in a similar predicament. Except I have a perfect stock crank, a set of 5.4 connecting rods, a set of ported big valve e7's, and a set of 190cc runner chinese heads. @@Backfire10 I can tell you from personal experience they work. Everything about the engine improves. In a race car, you get more throttle response and when you take your foot out, you feel added breaking power. Just take a stock fuel injected 5 liter. Just change the rods and pistons, re balance the engine. The mileage goes up by 2 miles per gallon. Ford should have done this. But they didn't tool up for the right rod. Went in opposite direction with the 289 rod. Notice why jap engines are good. They all are long rod.
@benalamedaracing2765

Just use the KB's they are cheap and can get the higher compression from their catalogs. Also the higher compression gives not just more power but better gas mileage as someone here said! True most import engines have long rods and it helps they have VTEC to help the softer bottom/mid range if a long rodded engine. Not by much but noticeable if you compared a short rod engine vs long version with the same cubic inches. In the end on the streets, nothing beat added displacement with good compression!
