If you are not letting your eyes FULLY dark adapt before observing then you are wasting your time and not getting the best views possible.
Being fully dark adapted will help to reveal substantially more detail in the faint objects that you're observing.
We spend a lot of time, effort and money on telescopes, eyepieces and filters so it makes sense to treat your eyes no differently and let these optical wonders do their magic.
Sunlight in the days prior to observing will reduce the effectiveness of your dark adaptation and white light during a session, be it from a torch or phone is a serious no-no.
Hopefully this short video gives a brief insight into the subject and you enjoy improving your visual observing sessions in the nights to come.
