On July 15th a well advestised significant severe weather event was taking shape over the Cornbelt/Great Lakes region. A cold front from Canada was moving southward slowly and interacting with the strongest dew points the midwest has seen in 2024 with several locations regestering dew points into the low to mid 80s! An upper level wave of wind shear was also moving in from the northwest which would give storms forcing to form. In the mid-afternoon over Central Iowa thunderstorms explosively developed and in the Early Evening a large complex of storms known as a derecho developed. This complex of storms would sweep all the way into Indiana and Michigan. Throughout portions of South Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Western Indiana widespread wind gusts of 74-95 mph were recorded with isolated swaths of 95+ mph gusts over IL/IA/WI. I would intercept this line of storms in LaRose, IL just before 9pm.
