I hope so too this coaster was on my bucket list. Based off of those long trains and that momentum going into this drop, the giant camel backs and airtime hills I would probably have this above Steel Vengeance in my opinion. Hopefully they get it up and running soon! Edit: I would hate for them to get it running and switch to shorter trains that would take a lot of the “whip” out in the back row especially on that drop.

Another reason Son of Beast was closed and tore down was because Paramount was the owner of the park when it was built. They also pushed RCCA to have it ready for the opening day of the park in 2000, and when there were delays and some of the initial deficiencies found during construction they fired RCCA and took over building it themselves. Paramount rushed to have it done in time but the second lift hill collapsed by itself in January of 2000 during a wind storm. Once Cedar Fair bought Kings Island in 2006 and after the accident plus the attempt to fix it couldn’t come anywhere close to the ridership numbers previously as well as more issues it was easier for them to pull the plug on it. I don’t know this as a fact but my guess is the reason it took until 2012 for them to officially announce its closure is because they were talking to RMC about trying to remodel it but more structural deficiencies were found and RMC was just starting and didn’t want to deal with the headaches. I hope some day in the future they will revisit the idea of building a coaster based off the lineage of The Beast and Son of Beast.

I feel like El Toto was received as pretty smooth and overall a ranked coaster while son of the beast quickly received rough review and only remains famous cause of the cult enthusiast following. I’ve ridden them both. Kings Island is my hometown park but I still believe that’s El Toro is miles of head of what SOB ever was. I think the coaster community would be far more devastated by a permanent closure of El Toro to a degree that SOB’s closing never received.

The thing I immediately started wondering is how this structure compares to the wooden support structures of RMC hybrids, which often pull some pretty significant forces. I know that RMC basically never just uses the existing structure unmodified, and they have things like steel ledgers that wooden coasters don't (and a few actually have steel structures, and many have a steel truss supporting the tallest bit). But it'll be interesting to see how the wooden-support hybrids fare over the long term.

RMC did build El Toro tho. Also NTG and Iron Rattler still held surprisingly well beyond what SoB did. Espescially considering both were Dinn and RCCA respectively and both were structurally questionable. Also looks like Schilke learn from the failure of S&S Wooden Coaster (Which ways legit Schilke layout attempt like RMC, but they self destruct themself when using normal speed)

That's a major design flaw and any competent structural engineer should have known the posts would split like that. The anchor sleeve should be a box tube, that would prevent that from occurring at the anchor point. At the very least, they will likely need to make that retrofit but I think ultimately it's going to be up to their insurance company whether or not they are willing to take on further risk. It may become cost prohibitive, especially given that the attraction is getting up there in age and now has a tarnished reputation. At this point, it's likely that Six Flags have recouped their investment and it may make more financial sense to close it.

I rode Son of Beast maybe 6 times. In that same period I rode The Beast probably 20 times. Honestly I couldn't believe how rough the ride was. It was painful and the last time I hurt my knee so badly that I never rode again. I remember many shaken and bewildered riders exiting that coaster. As for EL Toro, one incident with a failure wasn't something to end the coaster. However, when multiple failures occur such as what has happened, that's when management puts "demolition" on the list as a serious option. While the ride is popular, that may not be enough to overcome the liability factor. The park must consider the liability as insurance payouts for incidents can be more costly than a new attraction in its place. I'm sure they have concern for Park goers wellbeing but let's be real. Most of that concern for the guest is financially driven. Both of these incidents were serious and came close to major tragedy. The cost of the refurbishing of the coaster is no small figure either. It was within 2 years of a scheduled overhaul when this occurred. The cost of the materials for EL Toro are also significantly more than most wooden coasters due to the source of the material and maintenance cost of a wooden coaster in general is far higher than steel coasters of similar size. I certainly hope they go through with the refurbishing of the coaster, but I do understand that the cost of this and the liability may result in losing one of the best coasters ever built. The question is the cost. How significant is the damage and how many millions will it be to refurbish. I hope it's around for many more years but I'm definitely concerned.

Amusement park roller coasters are some of the hardest things to engineer and design for, as there are so many different loads experienced on the coaster frame, frame foundations etc. I've had experience in the engineering design of some coasters at my local amusement park. It's crazy how many different variables you design for, but always see new issues crop up after the structure is built and running.

Thank you for making these videos. I really wish content like this would be highly recommended to the General Public, in order to quell fears about coasters, to provide much needed knowledge about them, and to hopefully tone down the amount of misinformation that gets circulated with the GP. I try my best to get content like this out to people that may be on the fence about, or completely against coasters for reasons that aren't founded in truth. Hopefully someday El Toro will return to its former glory, however if it doesn't, it'll be completely understandable. With the way Six Flags is running their parks now, the lack of adequate maintenance and staffing may lead to more incidents. I truly hope more rides in the Six Flags chain don't suffer the same fate as El Toro. As it will only further deepen the GP's distrust in rollercoasters, and cause even more unfounded misinformation to be spread. It also doesn't help that media outlets milk incidents like this like crazy. Making people believe coasters in general are unsafe and dangerous. Again, Thank you Ryan. Your content is crucial for people to truly understand the intricacies of these works of art.

I think another big difference between El Toro and Son of Beast is that Cedar Fair has proven willing to dump problematic rides from Paramount parks (effectively saying that they bought the parks and don't care as much about individual rides) whereas Six Flags were the ones to put in El Toro. CF has removed a lot of rides from Paramount parks that predate them buying the parks when they get problematic (Volcano) or too expensive to refresh (Vortex)

I'm Sorry but I blame six flags/carpenters/maintenance program and how lax on the inspection of el toro because back in 2018, I felt this jolt on the track at the turn around, few notice it and other seemed not to notice but, It kind of concerned me, moving forward to 2020 my friends and I did a night time ride on el toro for their freight fest and there it was again on that same turn around but this time it was worst, you heard it and felt it, my best friend and I looked at each other like "WTF was that" we thought the train ran over something huge, I quickly remember how I felt something back in 2018 but wasn't sure if that was coming from the some spot. When I saw on the news about this accident and the structural damage, I was not surprised at all. I worked at six flag GA in the early 90's when batman was installed and again in the late 90's as a ride op for the chiller, every morning the maintenance crew walked the tracks and then, rod the ride along with the ride ops, nowadays they may some time walk the track but send out empty trains and not walk outside along the coaster grounds because if they did all that, they would have found the issue and resolved it without any news or social media being involved for content. The El Toro design error that I notice is that even though they did overbuild the structure by doubling things up they did not account for that extra weight at the bottom to hold it all up. The bottom was built as if it were a normally constructed coaster. The very lowest portions of the bent posts are undersized for the weight of the doubled up construction method. The only logical way to strengthen that would be the addition of tall steel members onto the lower end of the bent posts where the weight and forces are the highest. Reinforcing those structural deficits is going to cost a fortune but that will only happen if a structural engineer spots it and notifies the powers that be. There is a structural engineer on youtube with a channel named Building Integrity. He would be perfect for the job.

It definitely helps El Toro's cause that it was designed by REAL professionals and _not_ the Ripoff Coaster Corporation of America. Would it be fair to say that wooden coasters' structures are built basically the same way that timber trestle bridges are?

No. El toro opened in 2006. I don’t think el toro has been nearly as problematic. It’s a world class coaster. They’re going to get another 2 decades out of it

1:35 as someone who is still being killed by the price of lumber, WHY THE FUCK WASNT IT DECONSTRUCTED! I’m sure a lot of that wood would still be good for something! Someone PLEASE make a deconstruction company that focuses on roller coasters!!!! Edit: in case anyone is like “that wood is still usable.” Yes, most likely for chipboard. NOT as the original planks/beams though. There are plenty of hobby wood workers who are more than happy to reuse reclaimed wood so: 1) more trees don’t have to be chopped down, 2) less refuse is wasted, and 3) maybe we could get some cheaper lumber out of it!!!

GREAT VIDEO! I rode EL TORO many years ago and fell in love with it. Smooth, fast and scary....needed to ride it several times. It brought me back several years later where I felt it had lost its mojo and was much shakier. I didn't even ride it a 2nd time. I hope hey redo it enough to keep it and make it smoother again.

I know this is an old video but I just have to say the way they connect the bents to the concrete footers was a bad design right out the gate. The lumber is the size it needs to be for the prescribed loads but when they attach all of that weight by a a vertical line of screws, they are basically causing all of that weight to rest on the one screw at top. It is nearly the same as having the base of the bent stood on the edge of a splitting wedge. Of course the bents split there. They needed to either use some plates and cross bolts to compress the member to prevent splitting, or better yet, use a cup style metal support to allow the full face of the end to support the load with plates on all four faces to prevent splitting vertically. They don’t build balconies that support a much lower and less dynamic load that way, why they would build a rollercoaster that way makes no sense to me.

El Toro was a big disappointment Summer 2023. For many years I'd heard how great this coaster was, so my expectations were sky-high. I'm a wood coaster hobbyist, too, so I was extra excited. I was shocked during my first ride to feel at least 4, maybe 5 jolting, uncomfortable potholes. It was a huge letdown. I thought for sure other seats would feel them less, so I rode about 20 times, different seat each time, trying to like this coaster, but to no avail. I know enough from riding coasters as a hobby since 1981 that the potholes/jolts I felt were sections of track with structural issues. I've heard how smooth El Toro used to be. I hear it's now being re-tracked. I hope they're addressing whatever was slamming the train around last Summer when I rode. I'll return this year to give El Toro another chance.

2017 was the year myself, son & daughter came 900 miles to Great Adventure and rode three of the best coasters in the park. KINGDA KA, NITRO and EL TORO.

Well…. The ride is 17 years old. How long was the estimated lifespan? I am thinking about the rebuild of The Incredible Hulk, after it’s lifespan was over. I don’t see why El Toto can’t just be remodeled. It seems like it’s mostly age related.

Maybe the overengineering of Toro is its problem..no flex to transfer loadd...somethings got to give eventually... look at cyclone at coney island or giamt dilpper in Santa Cruz, 100 uear.old tradotionally build wood coasters still going strong

Great vid as always dude. You know the ride better than anyone but I just wanted to discuss the one point. I have to respectfully disagree with pointing fingers at six flags. Maintenance records are there yes but from what many know great adventure manufactures the track pieces in house for toro instead of having intamin do it as well as the track builders you mentioned. Six flags maintenance as a whole has been lacking as of late and this is the second incident within 2 years with toro. Now that's not intamins fault as toro is a beautifully designed ride and marvel of engineering but six flags "band aid" fixes have been catching up with them. Even the apparent whistle-blowers of the current toro staff have stated that when issues were brought up they slapped a band aid on it and called it good. Not following intamins protocol is entirely six flags cheaping out and lack of care. No other prefab has these major malfunctions. Sure Colossus got a complete overhaul but that was before any incident occurred. Six flags maintenance used to be good. I was the ride manager of mine train in the 2012 season when it got a whole new computer system. They kept up with their safety standards. To me this is honestly just six flags once again being the budget chain and general lack of caring.

Maybe the derailment had something to do with it? I feel like it couldn't have been good for any part of the ride, not just the tracks. Just seems like a crazy sudden, freak-accident failure.
