Haha, reminds me of many experiences few years ago as a train driver... Sometimes the struggle is hard, especially in winter with salt... 😊 One guy thought full throttle might be a better option but milled a 1.5cm pit in the rails... On all 8 wheels... Took them a few hours to repair 😁

Tejas Bhandare as someone who works for a railroad, and does maintenance, it takes about 30 seconds of decent wheel spin to make a 1/8th inch bump in the rail, once it’s that hot it’ll melt down extremely fast if the engineer doesn’t back off the throttle, usually you just replace the rails at that point

Tractive effort, adhesion traction. Just the shear weight of the loco or cars through the wheels to the rail is massive. It needs to have a smaller foot print, but massive weight to gain traction, to much area, and itll slip worse then this. Same example as if you took two lighter pieces of steel and slid them across each other. Fairly simple. Take a lighter steel and add a heavy one on top and try to move it. It almost welds itself to the bottom one. Adhesion force.

@Alexandre Thévoz It was damaging the rail by the way 😀 With wheel slip/slide protection, when the train detects any wheel slip/slide, the traction control and/or the brake control should trigger wheel slip/slide protection
@galax574
4 жыл бұрын
@Alexandre Thévoz I don't know which country you are from. I work in a railway company in Hong Kong for about 35 years. My experience tells me that in normal situation and in ABNORMAL situation (heavy rain/snow, etc.), the wheel should NOT slip/slide like this. And if the wheel slips/slides like so, the wheel slip/slide protection SHOULD be activated to control the C/I (traction) and BECU (brake). And once the slip/slide continues and disagrees with VOBC (signaling system), VOBC will become halted and EB (emergency brake) will be applied. In my country, no locomotives/EMUs (i.e. electric trains)/trams will experience serious slip/slide like this video. EMU should NOT fully release its brakes before enough traction is given to the train ( torque is enough to move to train to about 1 km/h). Once the train starts moving (or the torque is enough for the train to move) at about 1km/h, the holding brake (about 1 bar of brake cylinder pressure) can be released.
