Do you recommend I watch the play? Or do you think watching how other actors play the part will affect the way I play the part myself by giving me an “idea of how it should look like” ?

Once you’ve chosen a monologue, I definitely don’t recommend watching how other actors play the part. One of the worst crimes committed by actors auditioning for drama school is going into an audition room with a great imitation of another actor playing that part. It’s not compelling, it doesn’t showcase your talent as an artist (maybe as an imitator), and it comes from a place of fear that you’re not good enough. You’ve got to commit to the process and be hungry for a way of working that lets you uncover your own choices and how YOU would love through those imaginary circumstances. You gotta work on that with great coach (we think highly of our coaching if you need support in that area) and then give the gift in the audition room. Sorry for the lengthy response but if you’d like to connect, I’d love to hear more about your story and discuss your situation more! Email me - anthony@howtogetintodramaschool.com

How do we as actors prepare when judges ask us to adjust a scene?

When an audition panelist asks you to make an adjustment, it should be no different than what you do in a good coaching session. In good coaching sessions, you’re exploring different choices, finding deeper emotional connection, and keeping the piece malleable. When you’re performing in an audition, you’re not presenting some finished product, you’re just sharing the gift of the work you’ve put in. So I would say put in as much good work as possible and get as much support as you can so you can go into your auditions with a sense of confidence and a willingness to play full out. If you’d like to share more about where you’re at, I’m happy to elaborate and/or provide guidance on your best next steps. anthony@howtogetintodramaschool.com
