I recently removed the fuel filter of a Quadrajet in a 1973 Corvette where the flare nut and filter housing threads had completely seized to the point that even a professional mechanic did not want to do the job for fear he may break something.
I don't blame him as this thing felt like it had welded itself to the housing.
It took several tries since the flare nut was already pretty chewed up, so I was forced to use locking pliers. We also had to use a cheater pipe for leverage, otherwise, that nut was not coming off.
The filter (or screen) we dug out of the housing looked old and ready to be replaced.
According to the owner who has owned the Corvette since 2000, the fuel filter has not been changed since then... or longer. So it was overdue.
I also took the opportunity to adjust the idle mixture screws, but one had been bent in a way that I cannot understand how it did not break.
Anyway, I installed a new "short" fuel filter, adjusted the idle mixture screws to the best of my ability considering their condition, and took the Vette out for a test drive.
The car ran a lot better but it still needs lots of work, so stay tuned for more videos.
