These are good suggestions for a stripped screw, but not a stuck screw. I've got one that someone screwed into a server rack so tight that it won't budge. My screwdriver gets a perfectly good grip, but I can't turn it manually, or with an electric screwdriver. It doesn't stick out, so I can't grab it with vice grips or pliers either.

@DaruDhillon

I would try a rotary tool. I know shower doors and handles are challenging. You could also try drilling out the screw with a metal bit. I don’t know if that’s possible in your situation. Thanks and may you find a good solution.
@mrmet15

@@DaruDhillon Thanks for the quick response. I think the best bet is to drill out the screw from the other side through the broken towel bar handle. I need to try and preserve the screws so that everything matches as the screws are hard to find. If I use a rotary tool, I risk damaging the aluminum door frame. These doors are well over 50 years old. As far as the rollers go I could probably cut them off but I need to make sure I can find the right replacements first. The rollers work but I need to move them down one hole because the door is too high and sits above the bottom track.

Hardware stores sell rust penetrant that you can apply liberally to the head of a rusted screw. This will help to break down the rust. You can also use WD-40. You should also hit the screw a few times with a hammer to loosen the rust-without damaging the screw head. I would also cut a slat in the screw head if that wasn’t enough to loosen the screw. Good luck!

@@DaruDhillon You got back to me pretty quickly, though! 😃 I have not been able to remove all of them yet... my carpal tunnel is acting up. I am saving up for a power drill/screwdriver combo. Any tips on how to remove worn/rustled slotted (i.e flathead) screws from wood? I'm looking to reuse the timber for woodworking projects - some of it is actually quite beautiful fine-grain material. Thankfully, the wood it's attached to is where the screw heads are, so I ended up digging those out by chiseling away some of the cheap pine and then grabbing the screw with pliers. That was *very* time-consuming, though, and I still have a few dozen screws to go! 😱
