I went to one student council meeting my entire time in high school. The topic was the lunch schedule because they had recently changed it in a way that was unfair to sophomores and juniors and students were up in arms. I was the only student who showed up to the meeting who was not part of the student council. When they asked why I was there, I said I was "a concerned student," and it took them a minute to wrap their minds around the concept. Fortunately the students and the principal were able to reach a compromise that everyone was okay with. So yes, the only time the student council was in any way relevant to my life as a high schooler was when my ability to get lunch faster was threatened.

When I was in college, not a university, but a community college, I used to be a anime club representative for the student council in America. During all the budget meetings everyone was always shocked that the Anime Club never touched our budget and we ended up with the biggest amount cash leftover. When asked how, I replied, weebs are thifty people and that we usually spend our own money to attend anime conventions. Some clubs had their budget in the red and most didn't like Anime Club because they just saw us as a waste of space in the club room. I remember there were repeated attempts from clubs such the Chinese language club, the debate club, and electronic music/DJ club (out of all people lol) all tried to take our time slots in the club room for their meetings. I usually just bribe other clubs with our budget money during meetings and it was usually more than enough to get them to shut up because now they have money to go on their trips and such. The anime club president and other officers were fine with this because it was literally like an anime plot for them. Aside from the budget wars and time slots, literally nothing else happens. Closest threat that almost club shut down was when everyone voted in new student council people and some of them hated anime. It's been 10 years since I graduated from both college and the university, and I learned that the Anime Club there has finally kicked the bucket because of COVID and that took down all of the clubs.

Funny enough, I notice the Student Council President in those anime (or games) that have so much power just "happen to be the child, grandchild of the person who made or owns the school!" feels like a huge case of nepotism (even when they use the excuse of they were voted in by their own merit, your always going to have that feel that they got it largely because they pretty much will inherit ownership of the school eventually! Though it does mean they get shit done because they have a foot in the administration as "their potential future boss even if at the moment their the boss's kid/grandkid") Persona 5 turned in on it's heel with Makoto being shown to be barely effective at getting changes done because in essence knowing how japan and their schools are ACTUALLY LIKE! She's nothing but the Principal's "gopher," kept under control by recommendations she needs to get into a good university (or make it easier as she has good grades) and quilify for scholarships! Basically using that as blackmail to even have her do things that "aren't what she's suppose to be doing!" (like trying to sus out who the Phantom Thieves are....even though it should have been easy to figure out Ren/Joker was the ringleader, I think that's how Makoto figured it out as well, even when "A certain Male blonde haired idiot wasn't spouting out their identities!" the change of hearts happened with Kamoshida, and it wasn't private that they happened RIGHT when Kamoshida was pushing for Ren's expulsion after Shiho. Then all of a sudden, he confesses to his crimes, and what a nice coincidence that Ren's expulsion review is put on "indefinite hold" seeing how Kamoshida's name is so dirty and ruined, any suggestions, especially recently to his confession cannot be taken seriously or would be suspect at best! Especially since it was also known he had issues with Ryuji, the OTHER student he was recommending expulsion for, same with Mishima's someone who was apart of the volleyball team, ESPECIALLY him as it would look like he was trying to get rid of someone who knew what he was doing to cover his tracks! Frankly anyone with a brain and paying attention like Makoto and Akechi would put two and two together, it's weird the adults didn't, but then taking into mind, who was messing with perceptions to create occasional "allowances" it's easy to guess why!

I think it was actually done well in Kaguya-sama, they had to give speeches and whatnot, and probably the most important things shown were budgeting for clubs, the festival, and re-election campaigns, and they didn't really bother with class scheduling, or any fundamental school stuff, like budgets for the school itself. I think it's because student councils in Japan do actually have a bit of power, unlike in other countries. Obviously it's EXTREMELY exaggerated for anime, but their culture is generally a lot less willing to openly disobey perceived "authority", so I imagine Japanese student councils do have a bit of general authority over the student body so long as they don't push it too far. They also have distinct responsibilities (organizing home room classes and general "school spirit" activities) which lends them another level of legitimacy.

She approached everything so formally that it alienated her voters. Well, that and her common-sense, good-faith goals were overshadowed by shallow rhetoric. In the end, it was a change in framing (and speaking from the heart of course, because this is Precure!) that won her the vote. ...Sorry for the mini-rant; Smile was my first Precure show and I adore its characters. I was the president of a student council once back in high school, first grade (my high school had three grades, Mexico). It was a clusterfuck. I tried so fucking hard to make it work: organize time meetings, fundraisers for small school projects (I was fucking hyped for Dia de los Muertos), tried to gather enough awareness regarding drug usage using my preferred method: cold, hard truths, gardening, a small baking competition, and even a fishing trip. All of these failed terribly. Half of them didn't even pass beyond the desk because, surprise surprise, most of the council wasn't present... ever. Hell, I even suggested to the teachers and principal some more lenient ways to treat students arriving tardy, instead of just blocking the fucking entrance. They were open to the idea, had to discuss it with the other grade's councils. Couldn't even get them to sit and talk about it during lunch. Halfway through I gave up and never bothered to do shit again. Nobody ever asked me for anything, no signature, no council meeting, no extracurricular activities. Nothing. Couldn't even hate it because nothing was going on.

They wore a special gown, with a yellow stripe down the front. Their leader was the School Captain (who had a red stripe), and the Vice-Captain (with a blue stripe). The school captain had his own room he could use in the school. Before school, and during breaks and lunch, the prefects had to man checkpoints at various places, and ordinary students could only pass them with the correct card (for instance, if you were in chess club, you were allowed to visit the room chess club was held in during lunchtimes, so you'd need to show your chess club membership card to get past the prefects). During school assemblies, the observators had special chairs that faced sideways, so they could monitor the ordinary students.

Not the case in japan.

@Daniel Antony It really is though even in Japan. The idea of student council power in anime is an echo of the past, like how the icon for “save” is a floppy diskette

So I was on my schools student council for 4 years, and in that time, we managed to change the school dress code so that students could wear any suitable shoes that were primarily black (making everybody feel more comfortable in their own shoes rather than in the business shoes we had to wear), spend weeks advocating for the return of the previous school canteen as many students liked the simple menu of a chicken fillet roll and chicken curry and rice, participate in the climate change protests, and advocated for the current principal in the school to become vice principal when the former vice principal stepped down. All in all, our student council seemed to be an odd one out of all of them if this video is anything to go off of.

You got your principal demoted to vice-principal?
@redpandamurphy

@@prielknaaphofnar.9754 No. The vice principal left first and we advocated for him. Then when the former principal retired, he became the principal.

@@redpandamurphy Say no more, Mr General President Sir. We know you could probably nuke our small town if you want to, but I assure you there'll be no problems from us. You have our full support and undying loyalty to only you, I swear 🙇♂️

@Caiden We weren't. We had a running joke about one particular members abscence and we kept referencing the canteen situation whenever we could, even after all was said and done.

Damn. If my student council tried to have the dress code changed, we'd get detention.

I had a friend that was student council president. His speech was basically "I looked up the duties of the student council president and learned that it's pretty much just leading the pledge of allegiance in the morning". Then he started the pledge of allegiance.

the student council in Revolutionary Girl Utena does nothing but stand around, say cryptic shit and occasionally fight other people with swords. Much better than real student councils tbh

Been a long time since I watch it, but I thought the council and basically the anime itself, are parodying and playing with cliches of common anime high school genre. Not "funny" parody but "serious" parody, like Scream with horror genre.

I’m surprised y’all were able to organise mixers. My student council meetings consisted of: Student Council: We should do this! Staff Representative: No.

This is totally accurate. At my anime high school we had a class president who once had an honors students entire family killed in front of her for getting a single answer wrong in Math Olympics thus loosing the competition. We normally won pretty easily. I will never forget when the new loner bad boy transfer student single handedly killed the entire Student Council saving the honors student before she too was killed. I hear that now a days that she's a single mom, hubby was apparently an intergalactic bounty hunter/prince of some galactic kingdom and was killed under mysterious circumstances, really tragic. Though the kid should be turning 15 soon and should be off on his own adventure to find out who his father was and avenge his death at the hands of the killer. But THAT story will be NEXT season!
