A fault usually of negligible impedance between line and an exposed conductive part and or it’s CPC is an earth fault. A fault usually of negligible impedance between live conductors is a short circuit.

On the Am2 fault finding rig they have 4 possible faults, Short Circuit, Misconnection, Open Circuit and High Resistance. So from what it says on their website/videos, you will not have an Earth fault (L-CPC or N-CPC). Am I understanding this correctly?

The illustration for the half- split test isn’t quite right, the circuit is split at the outlets and not between the outlets.

His fault that he said he had about the curtain rail from line to protective conductor isnt a short circuit. Its an earth fault so if your sitting your FICA you would have to word this correctly to the assessor.

The correct definition of a short circuit is: Accidental or intentional conductive path between two or more conductive parts forcing the electric potential differences between these conductive parts to be equal to or close to zero. This is what happens during a fault to CPC. Earth fault is mentioned at 5:35 but it is still a short circuit according to the international definition. Also according to the international definition of Earth fault (notice the capitalized 'E' in Earth) this means a fault to the general mass of Earth and not specifically the earthing arrangement in an installation. I doubt you would fail a FICA or AM2 using the correct international definition. But if someone who invigilates either of these exams knows otherwise please post on here with info.

@@stevendevine nope, I've been in several fica nights and the training officer can't stress enough that earth to line is not a short circuit but an earth fault. the short circuit is considered to be line to neutral and an earth to neutral fault is what it says on the box. at least this is what it is during the fica, outwith in the real world i have no doubt you'd just call them all short circuit faults.

Why does it matter if you mistake the neutral with the line??
@stevendevine
4 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons that you would not want to mistake the Line with the Neutral. But fundamentally, if you mixed them up then you would have incorrect polarity and the installation would not comply with BS 7671 Regulations 134.2 134.2.1 and subsequently 642. this could mean that you are switching the Neutral conductor instead of the Line. This can present many issues for safety as well as control.

Odd graphics, some incorrect terminology and insufficient detail for people who don't already understand the process of fault-finding. Steve Devine is not a natural presenter, so this video isn't especially engaging.

This was so staged. And how is a student supposed to know what are the most common faults in a domestic installation? Badly staged and badly scripted. And this is an IET video no wonder the industry is broken.
