Free speech has consequences. Just because you can say something, doesn’t mean that you should!

💯 incorrect comment!

This statement is very incorrect. UGA is a state school. UGA is a public, government controlled, not private university. This means that unless your speech is either "fighting words", a direct threat, or a direct call to violence your speech is literally free of consequences from the government. I strongly recommend that you read the first amendment, and then speak to a lawyer, law professor, or read some First amendment freedom of speech Supreme Court decisions.

If they want to fight for their land then they need to go back over there and start there. Why are we involved? Why disrupt our country.

Simple: because our country and their University are actively supporting the thing that they are protesting against. Clearly these students care about the United States and UGA. They are advocating for divestment, and as a state school the First amendment literally gives them the right to do so.

@@marcypetty3375 they are fighting to have their tuition dollars be divested from the military industrial complex of a foreign country. Sounds sensible to me since... It's their money.

@@GwynneWalkerTrujillo that's where you are mistaken. UGA is a state school; as in a government school. The First amendment and Supreme Court decisions over the first amendment explicitly say that you are free of consequences due to speech from the government, any agent of the state, or government entity. The only exceptions are fighting words, direct threats, or direct and present calls to violence. Even if you support a despicable group you have the right to advocate for that group. This is exactly why the KKK and Nazis have not been outlawed in the US.

Amazing how many Americans in this comment section are advocating for these students to give up their literal First amendment right. It's the first one! Just in case anyone is confused UGA is a state school. It is a government school. The first amendment gives you freedom of speech, the right of assembly, and the right to redress grievances to your government. The students were participating in all three of these things.

@@taniasavick4685 please explain to me how not one of your tuition dollars to be invested in a military industrial complex of a foreign country will destroy America. Also, please show me the ANF video (or any video) where these UGA students were burning flags.
