This is seriously my favorite Gotye song and he absolutely nailed it, solo in the studio, I may add. This Man is extremely talented ;p

I am sorry to disappoint many people here, but the sound of the drums are pre-recorded and it's not the sound of what you see. The drumrolls would sound much more empty and simpler the way he plays them. The voice is very probably also recorded at another time(s) because otherwise you would hear the real drums in the background. It upsets me when people fake stuff. I do, however, really like his song and video clip of "Somebody that I used to know".

in my opinion he is not the kind of person to fake something like this to that degree there are evidently many layers of sound here, and not even all of the drum sounds are played by him, but I think what he plays is also audible, just have been refined in postproduction even if they didn't use the drum sound he was playing at all, they could still use the voice though, as far as I know a good sound engineer can filter it out especially if the drum was also recorded separately from the voice
