My opinion is that Atmos for music will go down the same pan as quadraphonic sound and 5.1 mixes went before. A gimmick to sell equipment to confused audiophiles. Stereo's more than enough.

stereo is enough? for who? I ask this cause I want to make it clear that I dont disagree with you. stero Is more than enough if you're working with music. However you call this a gimmick is completely short-sighted in a narrow is completely short cited in a narrow way to Look at industry Where music hardly even domintes the landscape. Movie revenue alone movie revenue alone Is more than what the revenue is from music because music is around 4.5 to 4.9 billion dollars a year The movies take in almost 12 billion dollars per year. However it's video games alone are the biggest revenue generated for anything entertainment related cuz the video game industry pulls in '91.7 billion per year. So if your studio one and you want to sell your platform why would you target it at people who just do music production. Which I suppose is in line with the fact that they got a whole new video editor inside of this doll software which I'm sure it's called a doll for a reason

No way! Try it. A mix done in Atmos has a much better separation and Instruments can much easier be put out of their ways. And that's on Headphones! no extra equipment needed. The only thing is: you have no busses when you have objects - so bus-compressing of e.g. a set of drums is difficult. But there are a few plugins out there that can communicate in between channels and so you get a needed "multi-channel-bidirectional sidechain" (e.g. SAMP by Hornet-Plugins). It's a learning curve again, but there is an advantage that will be asked for.

ATMOS is a fad. It reminds me of 3D TV's. Everything had to include 3D and for a time you couldn't hardly even buy a non 3D TV. Then came the headache of having to deal with the glasses in home and nobody wanted to deal with it. ATMOS is great but nobody I know outside of the music biz cares. I know a guy at work who only really listens to music in his car or on some crappy blue tooth speaker. He ain't got no money for an ATMOS system. But he consumes a metric ton of music. He is the average end user. My wife listens to music all day long at work. In a singular ear bud so she can still hear the world around her. She is the average end user. My teenage niece and her friends all have blue tooth speakers and cheap air pod knockoffs that they listen to music on all day, and they don't even know what ATMOS is. ATMOS is a waste of time and money. Can't wait for it to be only for movies and games. It's bloody fantastic for movies and games. It's just not how we as humans hear music when musicians play music in front of us. So we will never really embrace it and this is all marketing hype.

Well said. It's an industry led bandwagon and we should all stick together on this. People are believing the hype and spending serious money on Atmos speakers for absolutely no reason. It's the Millennium bug all over again. We didn't ask for it, the punters certainly didin't, they/re happy with mp3's in mono for goodness sake. So who does this serve.... the manufacturers and Dolby!

Atmos is a money driven project. Dolby labs have taken the piss for years. Leave 2 channel alone. Or licence your studio as an Dolby approved atmos studio. Of course you need all the speakers etc and the fee. Consumer can also ruin there music playback with the promise of better sound if they buy into atmos. Total con. Apple are all in. Need I say more.

As a band guy I've only mixed in stereo by now and never thought of mixing in surround or even Atmos. This has allways been a movie thing for me. I didn't get the advantage over stereo in the music context, but your graphical representation of the speaker setups made some things clear to me. Maybe this is really cool for music only projects, too. I can now imagine mixes representing a rehearsal setup and with a impulse reverb supporting Atmos it might even be better. Sounds like a lot of fun. Thank you for your explanation and your dedication in the graphic work for this video.

@@garethde-witt6433 I allways thought I'm able to detect a signal source in a 3D space 😉 Yes, we've only got two ears, but our brains are very good in decoding the sensory information of our ears into the aural perception of a 3D space and giving us an acoustic "image" of our "surrounding". Running time of signals and reflections as well as dampening by our auricles and our heads play a big role there. So we can locate signals all around us quite good - whether it comes from a natural source or from a speaker placed somewhere in a room. I'm quite sure that Studio One's "Atmos on headphones" makes use of these psycho-acoustic effects to mimic the perception of a surrounding. That's surround enough for me to have some fun 😁

I don't create video, movies or soundtracks, so all of this "extra" stuff is absolutely worthless to me. I would have been much more impressed with PreSonus if they had spent that same amount of energy fixing the bugs in the program and listening to user requests about what we want and what we need. ATMOS is great for the few mixers who will be using it, but I think that the majority of studios and especially home studios will find that having all of the ATMOS accessories and plug-ins just more trash to take up valuable real estate in their DAWs. Not even close to impressed with the latest bunch of "updates" - I'm sticking to my 5.x version until a decent update comes out that actually addresses issues that I face and that will actually improve either my workflow or my audio output (or both).

I dont use ATMOS either but you must be blind to really not see the value it brings. A DAW like will only thrive with widespread adoption from both amateurs and professional, and until ATMOS, Studio one was not good enough for the latter. Did you know that Netflix requires the mixes to support Surround? It's much more than it looks. Now Professionals will be able to use Studio one for their Hollywood needs and it will be very healthy for Presonus to have those kind of customers. And btw, it was one of the top requested features for years, so perhaps you should complain with "all the people requesting it"

Instead of Atmos, which is for musicians imho mainly irrelevant, Presonus better should fix the sync problem between S1 and external hardware (sequences drummachines, etc.) - The change of the Midi-clock offset.!! - A Feature which is included in Ableton Live or Cubase for years. Or another example - How many "Studio" users, i.e. composers, synthplayers, arrrangers, or remixers needs a lyrictrack????? imho only reasonable in Showmodus. Give me a break Fender/ Presonus and do something for "musicians" Or do it like Steinberg- A DAW like Cubase for musicians and a expanded DAW like Nuendo, with all that other fancy stuff i.e. Atmos, Dialogue ADR Features, Videoedit etc

Like many others I'm pretty convinced that Atmos for music production will not be a standard anytime soon and in a few years nobody will care about it anymore. I don't know anybody who has a real atmos speaker setup at home. Most people listen to music on their smartphones with crappy headphones or bluetooth speakers, Alexa & Co. The problem with binaural rendering is also that is only works if you are using headphones. On a normal stereo speaker setup the binaural mix doesn't work - it may even sound worse than on headphones. For movie production atmos may be the weapon of choice (although most people will probably use only a 5.1 version of it in the home setup). I really wished that Presonus concentrated on implementing standard features like middle mouse drag to scroll in the timeline(I'm used to hold the middle mouse button to move the timeline in every single other audio editor or DAW I've used so far) - only Studio One still does not provide this simple feature (probably very simple to implement compared to the new atmos stuff) As long as I'm not able to use middle mouse drag I'm not using Studio one (although I have a 6.5 license).

Oh dear.... what a sad day. Atmos deserves to go straight in the bin. Nobody asked for it, nobody wanted it. It's just a cynical industry gravy train and everybody should kick it where it belongs along with Quadraphonic, Betamax and DCC. Most people are listening to compressed inferior audio in mono or stereo on their phones and devices so what the hell is the point! When a band turns up at your local venue with an Atmos pa and the bass is coming form behind you and the keyboards from over the bar then MAYBE it would start to make sense BUT humans love stereo, it works... LEAVE IT ALONE! It belongs in a cinema!!!
