Tokkellaan is a composition by Jannie Hanepoot and is a dedication to two friends who passed away recently.
The tune was originally inspired by guitarist/composer Errol Dyers who was a key figure in the development of Cape Jazz from the 70's onwards in Cape Town. Errol was one of the musicians who remained in Cape Town during the "struggle" years (together with Robbie Jansen, Basil Coetzee etc) while a number of compatriots went into exile in Europe and the USA.
Hanepoot was fortunate to have worked with Errol a number of times over the years, and his arrangement of Errol's composition "Langery" is one of the pillars of the Hanepoot Big Band repertoire.
"Langery" refers to "a long row of houses" that Errol's family was forcibly removed to from their home in Harfield Village during the late 1970's. So "Tokkellaan" is actually a place... a lane where you can tokkel your guitar. The name for the tune was inspired by the surname of the saxophonist Chris Tokalon, another old friend and Hanepoot big band member who suddenly passed away while Hanepoot was in the process of preparing this tune for his big band. Chris used to relish playing long solos on "Langery".
About the band:
Jannie Hanepoot has been walking around with an acoustic brass band playing South African grooves in his head for years now, but while getting sidetracked by life (and the Hanepoot Big Band) this is where it remained.
This year he decided to bite the bullet, wrote some arrangements and got some of his favorite musicians together to play them. The result has been pretty awesome, and the Hanepoot Brass Band was born. There are some new originals and some exciting new arrangements of interesting and often lesser-known compositions by other
South African composers.
The Hanepoot Brass Band is a lively and colourful group of passionate musicians who get a thrill out of playing our indigenous SA tunes, covering a wide range between rock solid grooves and wild improvisation.

In 2001 he started the Hanepoot Big Band in Cape Town, which has now had an off-shoot in the Hanepoot Brass Band.
