I’m finishing up my undergrad currently, and while I’m not going to grad school, watching these videos is fantastic. I had an advanced calculus course last semester, and it broke me in the final part, but I’m incredibly proud of myself for finishing it out. Proof courses can be rough, but knowing that I was able to do it is such an achievement

Could you do a video discussing 1) how you pick a thesis 2) time line to complete PHD and Thesis 3) if you don’t get thesis on time can you come back to complete it someday?

I am a final year graduate student in algebraic geometry. I am never good at analysis and I enjoy your KZitem channel a lot, especially you show how you prove the theorems which I never would have the time to do them myself.

By the way, I received an email from the academic coordinator today, and he told me that I have time until December to submit my thesis. I feel a lot relaxed now, and I can finally work hard and get the thesis done. I didn't talk to anyone, but I believe that they made an exception for me... that's a miracle! They really believe in me and want to help.

I am happy to hear this! Trust me, I know what you are feeling because I went through this a few years ago. Study hard and do great things!

@@PhDVlog777 Yes... during my bachelor's degree, I was the only male major, and almost all the women with me were... unintelligent. Almost all of them did not want to pursue a master's degree, and many planned to get married, have kids and stay at home. One of them was even pregnant at the time! As a result, they'd tell each and every professor to skip all proofs... They enrolled into maths because of a scholarship they were getting, and they expected it to be full of formulas and simple calculations. They were shocked when they saw the real face of maths! It got so terrible that our real analysis exams were a joke... they were as easy as pie, and they'd still struggle to pass. We'd get a list of numbers... and we would be asked what's the supremum and what's the infimum. And they'd get that wrong, too. Can you believe that? We were never taught topology because of them. University politics dictated that these girls should be listened to and exams should be made easier, lest everyone fails and the professor loses his job as a result. All of this made me very lazy. I was able to study for my exams the night before and get an easy A. I enjoyed my time during my bachelor's degree and never bothered to read textbooks (they were unreadable (and still are), and KZitem didn't really exist at the time... KZitem is useless without x2, anyway). I didn't get to work on my proof-writing skills, and the professor who taught us foundations of mathematics didn't know how to prove himself! Most exams were without any proofs, and if we had any proof questions, they were simple proofs covered in class. The overwhelming majority of our courses were without any assignments - we only had simple quizzes. So this is how I entered my master's programme at a much stricter uni, and of course, my laziness and mathematical immaturity were about to kill me. I couldn't understand a thing taught in any class, although it was basic graduate maths, and I was unable to solve any of the assigned problems... and nobody wanted to help. It was a rat race there - a survival of the fittest. I failed real analysis (in my second semester, you can say) and was dismissed immediately. With a lot of difficulty and a lot of anonymous help, I managed to join another (less strict) uni. I've been here for five years now and I'm still struggling to graduate. I took measure theory thrice... failed it twice... failed numerical analysis, topology and abstract algebra, too, but I was close to 70% (except in numerical analysis), so the professors gave me 70% and I passed. I retook numerical, algebra and measure theory and managed to get an A, an A and a C+ respectively because the exams were a lot easier the second time around. So you can see where I'm coming from, brother, and why I'm struggling so much on my thesis. Until now, a part of me did not even want to begin! I took representation theory for my thesis and it was taught to us in a very childish way... you don't even teach it to bachelor students like that! Again, the reason is that my classmates are... DUMB! Sorry, I couldn't help it... I had to use that word. Oh, and surprisingly, I was the only male again... there were three other guys at one point, but they either left the uni or got kicked out. And, of course, once you are done with the courses or once you graduate, smarter students enrol, the courses get better and they learn things you never learnt. I've just been very unlucky throughout my academic life and have got the worst combo of professors and classmates... Sigh! I'm learning maths all over again using KZitem... focusing on algebra and representation theory at the moment for my thesis, but I'm going to start learning real analysis and measure theory soon... and even bachelor level stuff... calculus, foundations of maths, differential equations, topology etc. I'm trying to learn a hell lot every day... I have ADHD, so I can hyperfocus and learn new stuff quickly for long hours without getting bored... and learning a lot everyday does not equal forgetting things faster in my case, provided I think about what I've learnt or revise regularly.

@@ILoveMaths07 so you failed lots of classes and yet you think your classmates were dumb? Okay...

@@nicolasoyarce9734It looks like you didn't read well. I never called myself smart. I just said that when I'd get straight As, my classmates would almost be failing! How does that not make them dumb?

At the master's level, the dumb students would just memorise everything and answer every question that was the same as or similar to something covered in class. They wouldn't be able to answer anything outside that. A lot of the questions were always the stuff covered in class. I would be focusing on understanding the proofs and would never memorise anything. I would never write the proofs down and study them. As a result, I would fail. And if you want to hear it, yes, I'm dumb, too, but definitely not as awful as they are. I know the type of questions they'd ask the professors, and I know how so many of them have illegally managed to get their degrees.

Amazing! I loved it! Thank you so so so much! Bro, you're going to drive me mad... You're going to make me run away from algebra and do research only in analysis, even if it takes years! I really enjoyed the short proof of the Borel-Cantelli lemma. My measure theory professor really loved Fatou's lemma... that was his favourite. I liked it, too, but I'm not sure now if it was my favourite. Maybe the monotone convergence theorem is better... I really don't remember. Good luck for your test on Tuesday! I hope you get 100%.

Cool video/ Thank you. May be you can do a video about tips/recommendation for young mathematicians, for those who is studying in undergrad level?
