On an almost unconscious level, I have felt that I know I could debate or convince or talk these right-wing extremists down if I said just the right thing, or said it in just the right way. And over the last couple months, I've tried to look up ways to do so from people who are better about interacting with others than I would consider myself. This is the first video, or rather series of videos, that has done such an excellent job of laying out point by point the mindset of these people, and how best to defeat it. I cannot stress to you how excited I am to watch more of your videos. From the bottom of my heart thank you so, so much for doing this.

I will be willing to bet you that his advice won't get you nowhere and will only make things worse (if the goal is to eventually convince them that you're right). I'll dare to say that professor here actually has no real contact with people of that mindset - first clue being the goal of "stumping" them b/c people of this kind tend to have low tolerance to uncertainty, and quite rigid mindset - fighting that with confusing them will hardly do anything productive. They aren't receptive to reason or well rounded argument, so the best you can hope for is to get something along "we agree to disagree", "every opinion is valid" or similar response. The worst is strengthening their own conviction, because "stumping" as described here has only aim to humiliate, and not enlighten them. Given that people in general, let alone those who already have the rigid mindset, don't respond good to condescencion and sarcasm, especially when it's as obvious and easy to pick up like one demonstrated here, the most likely outcome is that they'll become defensive regardless of being wrong. So I'm honestly amazed how someone from top of the field gives such usless advice, since he should be familiar with research of authoritarianism, and right wing extremism, that literally depict what I've said above. The second clue is the sheer amount of talking - in real life situation he'll hardly be capable to talk that much interrupted. And even if he did, the things he say will only irritate the opponent because of all the sarcasm and looking down on the other person. Of course, if the goal is actuall to piss of them, that could be done with this approach. But then again, it seems that in that case he actually doesn't care about changing their mind, but feeding his own "herobot" within.

Rabbit, before watching the video I read your comment and igor's reply. I don't think I will need to watch it now. I can't say which of you is right. I wished that it were you Rabbit, but my years of experience battling with brainwashed cult members like MAGA has taught me that they are virtually impervious to facts, truth, evidence, logic, etc. America is in deep, deep, deep, caca. Now I finally understand what Germans went through in the 1930's. They lost, and despite all our advantages ... it looks like we will too.

well i think the 1st rule to understand is that no one is changing their minds in these conversations. The whole point of MAGAT'S going down this road is to feed their own frail little egos. @@igortirkajla8042I get what you are saying, but the goal is not to change the mind of the MAGAT. It is not possible with standard techniques. Facts can be dismissed like the air in those circles. I doubt a MAGA would have that lengthy a conversation with anyone. In my experience, their voice escalates to a scream within their first sentence. Then, they interrupt you continually never allowing you to talk AT ALL. When you finally give up trying to get a word in edgewise, they claim victory over you and walk off. That has been my experience, anyway.

But I’m personally dealing with a family member who is a highly intelligent, yet a QAnon believer, conspiracy theory, tin foil wearing maga Trump supporter since day one. And I’m the liberal snowflake. And I’m at my wits end sometimes because he has an answer for everything. He gets upset when I reference the cult of Trump and defends Trump every single time, for years. So the standing your ground example is not going to work with him. I think it’s the public humiliation. These people have to feel bad for them to change. They’re desperate to avoid feeling bad. So if we can plant a seed in their heads that they aren’t winning anymore they will be forced to adjust to keep chasing that dragon. It also takes away that self gratification by essentially brushing aside the insults. Without that self gratification there’s no point.

I started watching some of your videos hoping to find a way to detrumpify my brother's, some of the folks I have to work with, and trolls I meet up with online. But your way is too complicated for me to use. I'm the kind of guy that ends up not knowing what to say at the moment. The guy that thinks to himself a day later, "I shoulda said ....". A boxer that remembers to duck after he takes a hit. I never win a debate with a Trumper. I always end up looking like Biden did. Astonished and dumfounded at the sheer audacity of the liar I'm unable to confront. Wait, I did wear down a MAGA minion online one single time, years ago, before the pandemic. It was horrifying. I accused him of being a fat, bald guy, that was too old to be living in his mother's basement. And I kept beating him down with the question, "Why do you believe this Trump lie?" Over time his replies degenerated into pitifully misspelled and obviously semi literate regurgitated MAGA rants. However, during our online troll event, he did disclose that he was a retired fireman, setting in his LazyBoy, in the home he had managed to pay for after years of work. I realized then that it was quite possible that he was probably overweight, suffered from chronic hair loss, and as old as dirt. I still remember his last plaintive rejoinder, "But he speaks our language." In summary, I found no satisfaction in beating down a fellow human being. I resent and avoid being beat down by others. And, if I may make a suggestion, any person who has the ability to create super trolls, should use those abilities to effect a higher purpose, a purpose that benefits all. Be a real hero.
