THis video definitely nails it IMO. The first game takes a really neat, specific creative vision and fully commits to it, but suffers from a fatal flaw (load times), while the sequal just kinda took the rough idea of the first game and went off and did its own thing. One thing you didn't mention is that the replay cinematography in Ignition is pretty crap compared to how polished it was in the first game. The first game the replays all felt like movie scenes even outside the context of the trailers, but Ignition used a lot of generic race raplay cameras that didn't even properly show what was going on around you. They're both still fun games in their own right though, as you said.

I played the original one with my dad all the time as a kid, and when I got an Xbox 360 one of the first games I got for it was ignition. We both played like 3 levels and were just sort of underwhelmed. It felt like a watered down version of the original game. I actually just bought a ps2 and a few classic games for my dad for Christmas last year and we spent like 2 days getting through Stuntman again. Even with how old it was, the driving and challenge feel just as good as they did when I was a kid, and sitting next to my dad at 22 years old and still playing Stuntman was something I will always cherish. The original Stuntman is pretty much timeless, I will probably be playing it for the rest of my life when I get that particular itch that only Stuntman can scratch haha!

My uncle worked at Paradigm. He was the Senior Visual Artist on Stuntman Ignition and worked on the pretty cool old game Mission Impossible: Operation Surma. One time I visited him in Dallas when I was 10 and he took me to the studio and let me play Stuntman Ignition in the testing room with the beta tester guys before it was announced or there were any ads on TV or anything. Going home and telling my friends about the awesome game my uncle was making and I got to play before anyone else outside the company, and then them seeing commercials for it a couple of months later just like I said was one of the coolest memories of my childhood. Unfortunately this was the last game the company made before it was shut down do to the financial / corporate restructuring issues aforementioned in the video.

Personally, for old PS2 games with long load times, I recommend installing the freemcboot hack onto a memory card and loading the game onto an old IDE hard drive in the fat PS2's chamber that needs a network adapter to work. You can run the game on original hardware, and it tends to load games a lot quicker. It also saves wear and tear on the laser for those rare games that currently aren't compatible with software launchers like OPL. It can take a bit of doing to get fully set up, but once you do, it's great. You can play games from different regions with it, and it can play the few language hacked games out there on real hardware.

But this was the one game we could share and I have super fond memories of that from when I was a kid... Plus it was soooo fucking hard and unforgiving 😂. But it made it all the more worth it when you had that perfect run.. what made the difficulty so bad though we're the load times. That's the one bad memory of this game from playing it with my family all those years ago lol, half the time was spent staring at load screens because of a single tiny fuck up hahaha) anyway yeah man, I'm, excited as to see you cover it

Really great retrospective. I bought the first game after watching this and I'm absolutely loving it. If more people had seen a review like this back in the day I think the game would have been appreciated much more. It's quite a niche game and I think the marketing at the time gave people the wrong idea about what sort of gameplay to expect. I can imagine the constant trial and error being quite jarring if you were expecting arcade racing action.

I think the main reason these games feel timeless is because they stand alone. I kind of feel the same way about Test Drive: Eve of Destruction (which has very similar disc art to Ignition, with both being a wheel), which I love and constantly replay and feels "timeless" since there's never been another racing game that so perfectly captures the feel of small town racing (complete with permanent car damage), so the flaws of it's time are more forgivable. I'm sure if a new game that perfectly captured the feel of the original Stuntman, but had instant restarts and a perfect framerate, existed, the original wouldn't feel as timeless.

I know I am late but just wanted everyone to know that you can disable the green arrows and overly arcady HUD in Stuntman 2. You will still get the yellow stunt markings, so the game is still perfectly playable without the HUD. It definitely is harder without it and you have to carefully listen to the director‘s comments to know in which direction you have to drive next but it feels way more in line with the first game (minus the superior driving physics of S1). I won’t recommend it if you want a 5-star rating but for a first playthrough and more immersion, disabling the HUD is great in my opinion :)

The orignal game is so nostalgic for me, I always loved how your gameplay scenes were spread into the mock movie trailers, which led to much fun with me and my friends when we used a Codebreaker (I miss cheat devices...) to break the game by disabling being too slow and seeing action packed scenes intercut with a car awkwardly stuck sideways on an on ramp. AND MY LORD WAS THIS GAME HARD! But there is such a sense of satisfaction from beating it. This really reminded me of NES era game design, where games and levels were short but relied on quick reflexes and precision rather than spectacle and hand-holdy set pieces designed to make you feel badass. I feel this game is what made me not think the Big Smoke "follow the damn train" mission was all that difficult. I already was used to Dukes of Hazarding it onto a train from an awkward angle. 250 or so odd attempts until I get it right. Because of this, the relatively short game provided tweenage me with months of entertainment.

Stuntman is one of my all time favorite games. I'm a huge racing fan so it's in my wheelhouse, but the core gameplay loop is something I just haven't found anywhere else. I find myself playing through this game once every other year or so. It's to the point that when I do it I don't just do the scenes, but I try to make it my best to drive like I'm the character in the movie reacting to the set. For example, when there's gaps that you know will close I don't put myself in that spot knowing that's where I'll have to be. I'll do my best to drive in character and then suddenly react to the change in environment and frantically aim for the remaining gap. It's so much fun this way. I haven't gotten to the second part of this video where you talk about Stuntman Ignition, but that just was not the same. It felt way too arcadey in both looks and the way the cars drove. I still beat it completely, but I was actively forcing myself to do that. That was not the case for the original Stuntman.

Got Ignition for PS2 from a friend a few years ago passing on their stuff and Ignition is really interesting as an entry to 1 of the 2 games. Especially for getting into more arcade racers recently. Being a Stuntman is a cool idea and the trailers are fun to see even if the levels can be challenging in a pull your hair out way. Sad there is only 2 games but they are amazing creative games from a time where it was great to see bizarre creative ideas.

The first Stuntman will forever be one of my favorites on the PS2. From the joyously cheesy trailers that used your actual driving, to the maddening trial-and-error gameplay, it was a blast to play through. A shame it doesn't run properly on emulators - I've always wondered why that is. After I boxed up my PS2 to make room for it, I had the second iteration of the launch PS3 (the one with backwards compatibility, but through an inbuilt emulator as opposed to the actual launch model with the PS2's chipset inside). Stuntman would always break on the chase missions. Something about the AI pathing didn't allow chase vehicles to properly navigate the course without crashing and getting stuck.

Nailed it for me. I think I got way too frustrated at Stuntman's load times that the update in Ignition makes that version superior to the original in my head, always. But loved the original game's style & concept, just that Ignition made it much more playable.

As someone who isn't very good at driving games, Ignition seemed to be just the right difficulty for me. I had to retry stages plenty of times when I revisited the game last month before beating them and getting to the end felt very rewarding. Honestly it seems like what these games really needed was a difficulty setting that changed up some of the level layouts and things like that to balance it for the players skill level

A modern day remake of stuntman: ignition would sell well or even an entirely different named game of the same “stuntman shooting a movie scene concept” is just such fun gameplay.
