The video started and I immediately thought, that looks like Longview. Those same Boaters also drive cars, now that is a terrifying thought.

I kayak on the local lakes. I stay along the shoreline to give the power boaters room to play. You would be amazed to see how many boats try and see how close they can come to me at full speed. My kayak has a rudder so as they pass I cut hard into their wake so i don't get hit broadside by the wake. Some days I feel like firing a warning shot into the boat.

*There are some stupid people out there! Move the damn boat already! Were they expecting the 700 foot long ship to yield to them?*

This makes as much sense as standing on the yellow lines on a highway while having semi trucks whip beside you you.

one of my great uncles who was a long time railroad engineer who also enjoyed fishing in the 1000 islands told me once its like a train we cannot stop when we blow the horn we cannot stop, he had a freight train with a mile long string of railcars freighter or other large ship works the same way

I live on my Sailboat just upriver from Rainier and Longview and yes this kind of Stupidity is extremely common with Sport Fishermen on the Columbia River. I will not be surprised when a ship takes out a boat load of Idiots.

i have a 50 ton master captain's license. i can say a few things with specific knowledge about this situation. any person with a boater safety card should know that anchoring or pulling a tube/skier is prohibited inside a marked channel. 5 or more prolonged horn blast means a dangerous situation is occurring. the navigation rules state that a boat inside a channel shall stay to the starboard (right) most side of the channel, which the large vessel did. that rule eliminates confusion from oncoming vessels trying to figure out which side to pass on. the large vessel is what is called 'stand on' vessel in this case. the stand on vessel, by the navigation rules, is to maintain course and speed until a point of extremis (dodge at the last minute). the boats in the channel at anchor are called the 'give way' vessels. they are to change course or speed to allow the safe passage of the stand on vessel. it is hard to see from the low resolution video, but i would suspect that if the boat were to move over, he would encounter more idiots anchored up on the other side. in which case, the capt of the large vessel would be responsible for any damage, injury, or deaths. he did the right thing. if he would have hit the small boats on the starboard side of the channel it would be the small boats fault

5 blasts is a signal for "danger or doubt maneuver" that 1 prolonged blast should be accompanied by a day shape internationally known as the "middle finger"

If you look at the laws of the waterways the brake away vessel is the one that is more maneuverable which in this case it is the small boats illegally anchored in the shipping channel.

Still remember one of the first rules of navigation that I learned about 5 years old The Three R s Red on the Right on Return! For navigation lights
