Lovelocks are vandalism and cause extreme stress to structures that were not rated for all the extra weight... Thats how u collapse a bridge
@CC-qx7hk
3 күн бұрын
Clearly cities can afford to have someone come by and remove them. It brings in tourism money to the locals, more jobs for removing locks, and the permanent stress is only caused when it's ignored for so long so keep it to weekly cleaning. (or more if needed. If a KZitemr and a couple others can volunteer enough time to do it for free, governments can pay a couple people to spend their working hours going around and cutting locks. It also takes money out of scammer's pockets.) I see no issue with it if cities keep up with cleaning them and see no downsides to cities removing them. People will pay tax one way or another, this way there are more jobs for the people at the least.

@CX103

Unfortunately people misunderstand the tradition. Legend has it that if you hang a lock on the Pond des Arts or Karluv Most, you will never leave Paris or Prague as a couple. Your love stays right there. You'll break up, or more likely, one of you will die. There's even a DuoLingo story line about it. Frantisek and Katerina leave a lock on the bridge. Katerina eventually goes crazy, holding dead bird in the strange tool she has in her left hand, until one day Frantisek goes looking for her, and all he finds, floating under the bridge is her t-shirt: Zůstalo jen tričko, které měla na sobě. Don't mess with river gods.

Here in Cologne it's actually legal. There are a lot of shops that sell the love locks and tourists put them up on a railway bridge near the Cologne dome. Nobody really cares, because it's not a historical bridge or something like that and the city removes the locks regularly and either sells the metal or recycles it themselves. I think after the collapse of the panel in Paris some engineers actually looked at the bridge and considered whether the locks were causing any sort of stress on the bridge or not, and they don't cause any damage.

@@tcormio1359 Depending on the source it's between one and 1.5 million locks on the Hohenzollernbrücke, that's between 45 and 60 tons of additional weight, the first locks appeared in 2008. The Deutsche Bahn has said multiple times that the weight actually isn't an issue, but the vibrations from the trains going over the bridge cause the locks to rub on the railings they are locked to, which might cause corrosion. In 2018 they considered removing the locks, but decided not to (atleast so far). I found a few sources claiming that the city did remove some locks that were a hazard, because they reached too far into the bicycle lane. On the official website of the city the locks are actually listet as a tourist destination.

Love locks should be placed on a specific spot in each country where the structure can handle it. However if it weights really 700 kg or 1400 pounds... It's getting ridiculous. A bridge that collapsed because of love locks is stupid. Than they have to remove everything, fish the locks out of the water or the locks may pollute the water,... and they have to build a new bridge all because of some tourists that likes to put their lock on bridges... You can even say that the love locks is starting to become a scam on it's own if someone guesses the combination or use an universal key and resell the lock again later.
