198 cm for those not from US. Sweet lil tree ;) Magnificent transformation! As for the Yamadori part: wasn't that the original way of having bonsai in general? Digging it up and potting and starting to clip and grow it to gain the wanted result. I do grow trees from seed too (or buy nursery stock) , but for now my best ones are the collected ones.

What a huge piece. Its quite american. Just a beast. Yamadori is the key point in bonsai and the begining of it on my ways so it can be obviated. Other thing is if I would go to the mountain to get one. The answer is no.

Amazing. I live in central NM and this winter I collected two struggling trees off my own land--a pinion with needle scale, and a one seed juniper that was growing in the middle of a sheep pen that would otherwise be trampled to dust. I've repotted them and i'm excited to style them at some point next fall.

i like collected bonsai because there is so much care that goes into preserving the story of the individual. the way you talked about that little branch that was not broken through the generations showed how much respect you carry for trees as living creatures

Couldn't live to see this video ;) This tree brings to mind these famous bristlecone pines. The deadwood is unbelievable. I haven't seen something even close to this in my life. I believe that this tree will become one of the best bonsai ever under your care. Cheers from Poland and UK!

As long as the plant that was taken is happy and thriving in its new environment, and continues to do so, i see no problem with it. As long as removing it doesn't hurt the ecology.

LOVE that twisted wood!! I just love the way cedar/coniferous tree trunks look in general but this one is AMAZING! can't wait to see the tree in when it's got some more growth to it! Looks great so far.

First, this is/will be a specimen tree. That said you cracked me up when you said "this tree has been struggling to survive for hundreds and hundreds of years..." It was probably here before we were and survived who knows how many world changing events. Beautiful tree. Looking forward to future updates.
