I am 72 and this is one of my many Styx favorites. Growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional. If I could still ride I would still be blasting this out of the stereo on my Honda Gold Wing. I was introduced to Styx by my stepchildren from my second marriage. They had all the albums and because Styx first road manager, Jim Voss, was a relative we got free concert tickets too. Styx eventually replaced Voss as road manager and the free tickets ended but by then I was a die hard fan.

This without a doubt the best songs that Tommy Shaw has written and ever sang. I love so many of his creations, but on this song on Kilroy is my one of my favorites. The crescendo is amazing and that string riff is striking. I wish he would give a little background about this composition for his fans. He should do it sometime in concert.

Hard to believe this album was bashed by critics, and also spelled the beginning of the end of the band of of DDY, TS, and JY. It is also widely considered to be the weakest of the original Styx' final five albums (GI, POE, CS, PT, and KWH). But the bottom line is this album was one fine piece of work that puts to shame anything put out today. Could be that Dennis' artistic visions at this time were just beyond what most musical 'experts' were able to comprehend. Great vocals by Tommy as well. Too bad these guys decided to go different directions, collectively they produced musical magic. Most will agree that even Styx' worst songs are still great.

Tommy and JY sarcastically say that they "didn't know how to write songs about robots", but there are some real gems from Tommy on here. I loved this album when it came out, and I went from a casual Styx fan to a big Styx fan, back tracking and buying all their previous albums instead of just the 45's I had bought along the way or taped off the radio. When a new College friend in the mid 80s said he had a VHS tape of Styx, I couldn't want to see it. I absolutely had the kind of music typically used in musicals, but I enjoy the production of them.. I absolutely loved their stage show. It made me an even bigger fan than I already was. And I couldn't wait to see them live. Well, the wait was something like 7 years. And it still lacked Shaw, the 2nd most talented member of the band. Then I saw the next two tours with Shaw before they kicked Dennis out. I've never been as good ever since. But anyway, I loved their stage show and this album. I still think The Grand Illusions & Pieces of Eight were their best albums, but this was a great one anyway despite what some of the fans and critics though. I think many people mixed up the themes they didn't like in the lyrical subject matter and had mistaken that for the album being bad music. We let me tell you something. All good musicians, and good singers write the lyrics last. The words don't matter! Listen to the great music and melodies! Phil Collins, Micheal Jackson, Dennis Deyoung and pretty much any great writer, they sing babble words to achieve a great melody, and then later on decide what the words will be. Least important part of music. So if you can pretend you don't know what their singing about, wither you hate the themes or not, this is fantastic music to listen to.

This was the beginning of the end for styx if you ask me. Dennis DeYoung wanted to start doing these shitty concept albums and the rest of the band just wasn't following, sad, but it is what it is.
@hutch1197
7 жыл бұрын
The rest of the band followed along because they didn't have any better ideas. They could have refused to go along with it. But they always did, because Dennis' songs/ideas sold albums. Tommy wrote three top 40 hits for the band (and only one cracked the top 10). Every other hit Styx song was written by Dennis. Their only #1 album was Paradise Theater....all Dennis' idea. So while the band bitched about his "shitty concept albums", they never seemed to have a problem collecting their big paychecks over the years thanks to Dennis' hits.
@diceytrust2768

Werner Huehn ~ Actually, I agree. This track, and "Double Life" are my favorites. "Heavy Metal Poisoning" was ok musically, but lyrically a bit corny because it went into the "Kilroy" concept too much. And I know that's what it is suppose to do, but the Robot themed shows ruined this album for me. Turned it into a circus act. The real issue that was missed because of the ridiculous stage show, & roboto costumes, was the censorship problem.
@diceytrust2768
7 жыл бұрын
ThatGuyJames ~ Well it wasn't the "concept" albums they objected to per say, but it was this concept here they didn't like. And more over, the broadway circus act, Dennis forced on the band during the tour. Remember, "Grand Illusion, Pieces Of Eight, & Paradise Theatre", were also concept albums. The people on here saying how great this album was though, need to realize that "Kilroy..." only sold 1 million copies, which is far below their last four albums before "Kilroy..." This album was very weak to me. Because most members in the band wasn't on board about it, many of the tracks did not have a lot to do with the actual concept. This track, & JY's "Double Life", are my favorites from "Kilroy...". "Mr Roboto" was catchy, but very corny. I'm curious what you think of their lastest album "The Mission"?

As a whole, I thought *Kilroy...* was too over the top ridiculous, & corny. Nearly sounding like a parody album. And I'm actually being nice here...

This song has a such a cinematic like quality to it that fits perfectly with the KWH record. The intro combo with the Piano, Droning Synth(s) & Shamisen make such a perfect trio. Also love the ending with the synth noodling and piano that fades out. Some of my fav moments in any Styx song! One of the best from the band and the fact it hasn't been recognized is such a shame, folks are missing out! Also love the synth ring at 5:39 & the drum roll at 5:33. At 5:47 you can hear a synth sustaining in the background too. Little details like that add so much to the world this songs creates

In its day, many despised the Kilroy album for the its jarring new sound that betrayed what Styx fans expected from them. But, in my opinion, in retrospect it was quite brilliant. This song, in particular, is amazing. The melodies, the production, everything. I wish they could have kept their egos in check and continued to explore reinventing themselves.
