This song and Suite Madam Blue, pretty much sums up America today. A country more interested in being a police state to the rest of the world, rather than being a light of integrity for them. A country more interested in buying the next generation of smartphones, rather than getting to know your next door neighbor. Styx saw it back then. Yet, most people still vote for the same politicians that have the same negative attributes as they do. WE, THE CONSUMER!!!

We democracies have gotta be a police state to others lest authoritarians take over. But these days are not about all that. There’s an evil radical conservative movement threatening our very America and democracy worldwide. It AIN’T freakin “trump hating liberals” destroying America and threatening other democratic countries. It’s the elite republicans and their Russian bedbuddies. Power and money. Pieces of Eight.

Yea, I agree. There's something about that final piano run and low/high note with the Synth note connecting the two pieces. I get lost in this every time. 😍💪🎵

A few things, and it's very lengthy. First, Dennis wanted Concept albums. If you haven't had a chance, go watch Behind The Music because that will tell you all about the differences that happened with the band. John Panazzo was drinking heavily. Tommy Bleepin' Shaw was "self medicating." (No idea what his choice was on the medicating, though.) All but Dennis wanted a harder edged rock sound, while Dennis wanted Pop and a theatrical appearance and pieces. Personally, I see Styx as a rock band, not the pop crap that was put out in the 80s, which over half the bands from the 70s that survived that "epic, concept' period ended pulling towards, making way for bands like Twisted Sister, Ratt, Poison, G-N-R, and other such bands to come forth for a harder sound. Don't blame Tommy, JY, or the other guys for that break up in the band, but you can blame Dennis for 84. As for Dennis' departure in 97, he couldn't give a time frame. So he was ousted, and then decided to be nasty about it and put a lawsuit for the name Styx. Last time I checked, Styx was also started by the Panazzo Brothers as well as Dennis, and Chuck, being the surviving brother, had rights to tour with the name as well. John and Chuck were actually more loyal toward JY and Tommy because they were going in the direction that both Chuck and John wanted to go. When Dennis did not give a time frame, but decided to go forward with his "Hunchback" show, that was his way of saying, I'm ok to do this, but not perform with Styx. That's why he was replaced with Lawrence Gowan, whom I must say is a very, VERY talented guy. (And a character I might add!) You may argue that Chuck Panazzo was also replaced, but not really. Chuck comes out for certain tunes, and does tour with the guys, but lightened his load because of his HIV status. When he didn't know what was going on with his own health, they did bring in Ricky Phillips, also another talented guy, and I believe Ricky knew that either it could be a partially full time gig, or that it was just a temp gig, to which the partially full time gig won out. As for Todd, he was brought in after John's death, and was only the second drummer that Chuck ever performed with, with Chuck giving his blessing to that change. Now you can say what you want about Tommy owing Dennis one. The real story is one that some here either aren't getting even though they might have heard it, or some haven't gotten at all and are quick to point. Also, on the RRHOF. I would say they do belong for some of the concept 70s stuff they did. I wasn't impressed at all with Paradise Theatre and I wasn't too impressed with Kilroy Was Here. (I realize some will argue with what I'm about to say, but Mr Roboto seems more like a cheerleading routine than a tune that Styx would do. Perhaps that's why I wanted to try and make it into a part of my niece's dance recital and cheerleading tryout?) Lastly, I would go see the version of Styx that's out there. Just from what I've seen on TV, it looks to be a hell of a show. I find Lawrence Gowan to be better than Dennis because he has those notes he can hit that I noticed in the recordings Dennis had a hard time keeping. I find him to be a showman too, which I don't see Dennis doing unless he's turning it over into a whole theatrical show, and if I really wanted that, I would go to New York for a Broadway show, which incidentally, there are rock Broadway shows. I classify myself a fan of Classic Prog Rock. Stuff before Paradise Theatre, like Cornerstone, POE, Grand Illusion.... I classify as Classic Prog Rock. They rank with Rush, who is my all time favorite band. They hold up to The Who, another one of my faves, and they do give Yes a run for their money in my playlist. My point in saying that is this. You don't really need Dennis and his drama to have those classics floating around and getting new generations into it.
@zoso73
6 жыл бұрын
Good analysis. But Denis' desire for theatrical performances is a part of what makes Styx Styx. I realize it reduces the 'rock,' but he is an incredible song-writer, singer and performer. It's a shame they couldn't compromise.
@TheBunnyist
6 жыл бұрын
Paradise Theater and Kilroy was Here were absolutely horrendous, in my personal opinion. I saw an interview with Tommy Shaw, and while he was admittedly doing the self-medicating thing, I do believe he was 'in touch" enough to know he hated the direction Dennis DeYoung was taking the group. I recall him saying that if he just could NOT perform the Kilroy Was Here crap AGAIN. I was so relieved to hear him say that, as I was a fan of the Old Styx, before De Young turned it all in to a crappy Broadway show. I was embarrassed for them.
