Wow, this song gives me even more goosebumps now than in the eighties. These days are crazy, and I still find solace in the classics of my childhood and youth.

Had to hear this just once more. My then-boyfriend Ronnie heard this before I did, played it for me and it became "our song". We got married in 1981 and he passed away 24 years ago. Heard it the other day in the grocery store and had to buy a box of Kleenex. I'd all but forgotten just how beautiful this tune was. Thanks for the upload and memories!

I was born in 1959 and will soon be turning 65, but I'll still happily listen to Styx every chance I get. They were a constant, comforting presence all across the FM band (album-oriented adult rock) during my early adulthood, and I still enjoy them thoroughly after all these years. I was lucky enough to watch their reunion gig at the Paradise on television, and recorded it. Now, once I finally dig out that VHS cassette, I have a machine for copying to DVD, so I can transfer it over and keep enjoying it for the rest of my life.😁

I was born in '89 and my parents took me to my first concert when I was 4 years old. It was Styx and Kansas. Growing up I always would ask my dad for a good CD to listen to (he had/has hundreds) and my favorite was always the Styx greatest hits CD. There wasn't a bad song on it and I know every lyric from start to finish. But I'm gonna sit here and say that today's music sucks because it doesn't, I'm a fan of music in general and I can appreciate 80's rock as much as I can appreciate today's music. Music is ever changing and that's what makes it so damn beautiful!!

If it’s a romantic Styx song, it was probably the work of Dennis DeYoung, who was with the band until 1999. He’s the one who authored and sang “The Best of Times” (1981). Dennis Deyoung stated : “For me, the song is simple. It’s when the world goes mad, how do you cope? And in this instance, it’s the love between two people, that they make their own paradise within their companionship, their love for each other, and their own home… It’s saying that the best of times are when I’m alone with you.” DeYoung got the title from Charles Dickens’ 1859 “A Tale of Two Cities”, which opens with the famous passage : “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This was the first single from the “Paradise Theatre” album (1981), which had a loose concept centered around the rise and fall of a theatre in Chicago. In that context, the tune recalls the glory days of the Paradise Theatre. The word “paradise” shows up thrice in the lyrics, and can refer to either the building or the state of mind : “Rumor has it it’s the end of paradise … I wish the summer winds could bring back paradise … But tonight will always last As long as we keep alive memories of paradise” Styx had three gifted vocalists (Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw and James Young) which allowed for tight harmonies as heard on this piece’s chorus. Mr DeYoung posted a video of himself singing this from home on his piano while quarantined during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. “This goes back to 1981, but it feels appropriate,” he said❕ 💙🎹💚

I remember my mom being a huge Styx fan. We would listen to our copy of the "Best Of" album in our car, singing at the top of our lungs. She would tell me about her "Paradise Theatre" album from when she was a teen and I would yearn to listen to it. It was my 8th or 9th birthday and she handed me a small square package. I opened it up greedily and there was my very own cassette of "Paradise Theatre". I got so excited that I ran out of energy and took a nap nearly all day.
