Subaru has just launched their latest WRX performance sedan and wagon. It is a vehicle that has an image and an impact of the life and times of motoring over the last 30 years.
This video is not a gushing tribute to the car (although I enjoy driving it very much). Our approach is to present some facts and opinions and to reflect on the life and times of the car and where it is being targeted in the future.
In this video look at the details of the new car and talk to their
1. General Manager;
2. Public Relations General Manager,
3. Marketing General Manager,
4. Molly Taylor the professional rally driver who was there to help us understand the potential of this vehicle and
5. The Technical Product Engineer on what looks like garnishes on the side of the sedan but really have important aerodynamic effects.
This is the fifth generation WRX, but this time there are two distinct models. The sedan is the hero car for the sporty image.
The wagon which is really carrying on from their Levorg model which they ceased selling a year or so ago: It was a good car, it had a WRX engine but they did not cash in on the WRX name and they crashed out on the Levorg name (which it was pointed out when you spell it backward it gives you grovel).
Not using the WRX badge was, perhaps, an attempt to distance it from the yahoo image that some associated with some of the antiques and actions of young owners including having to listen to their doof doof music. Some have spoken of an immature image that became associated with the nameplate.
With the new model both the sedan and wagon have three specification levels and there are bling options on the exterior that pays homage to STI image. There’s a very moderate increase in power, no hot STi but a strong focus on improved handling.
