The outriggers are for stability in rough seas, which you'd normally get by making the ship larger. They are a weakness in combat. OTOH, it'd be better to collide with an outrigger than the main hull. I wonder if there's a subroutine for parrying torpedoes. Shipping companies are also working on autonomous guidance. A difference in their perspective is that they can't afford to lose their cargoes whereas military drones are relatively disposable.
@Hellsong89
2 жыл бұрын
I think piracy would start to bloom after that. No crew, no defense against the boarding party and no you simply cannot build ship that cannot be taken over with physical access, unless you go by route of denial of cargo by blowing ship and everything aboard when its attempted to take over. Also signal interference and EMP's are evolving so ship like that is easily blocked in future from sending SOS in cases like that. To board the ship you need men with guns and its usually pretty horrid job to do even if ship is not moving since lack of cover except for frog men and steep sides with little cover.
@icollectstories5702
2 жыл бұрын
@@Hellsong89 Well, if a crew were unable to signal for help, why would removing the crew make things worse? It would make sense to provide automated threat detection that sees into the infrared and never sleeps. This could also done on crewed ships if one wanted. Ultimately, no security is perfect, and the best you can do is convince thieves to try elsewhere. Personally, I have fewer qualms about blowing stuff up if no crew were being held hostage. Stealing the entire ship would require the cooperation of the engines. More likely, pirates would either sink the ship or hold it for ransom, and either way it's best if no crew were aboard. Such actions usually attract the attention of the various navies, and that's not a good career choice.

Think of spelling "turn left 5.6 degrees" with 5000 characters, with any errors being flagged as suspicious. It would take a lot of time to break such a code. Denmark produced the Stanflex 100 mine warfare vessel which, like Sea Hunter, can be manned or unmanned. Wow: I didn't realize we have perfected an internal combustion engine! One that never has to have the oil checked, or changed. That always starts on the first try--always. With fuel and oil lines that never leak or clog. And, what about those electronic devices? Never have to be re-booted. Never go off line, even if, as thhe result of little fractures, salt water gets in to system somehow. And they are really cost effective. I mean, if they need help, or discover an enemy, there will be an old outdated ship with sailors that will be close by to take care of the enemy. So if we have a hundred of these wonder ships wandering around the world, we probably only have to have two or three hundred old style mannned ships (you need more than 100 because manned ships have to rotate crews, put into port for fuel, maintenance and food etc). Boy, quite a cost savings. I thought we needed a Navy to protect our nation and fight the enemy. Of course I an old fart (80), with outdated ideas.

the ships would operate out of a manned battlegroup capable of servicing the drone regularly. they would almost always have people nearby. but a speedboat full of techs is cheaper than a 2-300 man crew.

Redundancy. Lots and lots of redundancy. Sure, things break. give it enough backups and it can last a while. Also pretty sure these aren't I.C.E., but rechargeable electrics. If they have I.C.E. on them, they will probably be very small diesel battery chargers.

We shall see, autonomous is one big unknown. If we control it remotely can somebody board it and take over? or add their own sensors, or manipulate what it is sending? The questions are endless. This is all about the money. BTW don't think for one second it will be unarmed, eventually it will be armed some how.

I totally agree. And not o ly taken over by a boarding party being a major threat, so are EMP, solar storms, and frequency jamming and frequency hijacking a threat that are not taken in to account when LEIDOS designed these vessels.

You guys really think the Navy hasn't incorporated anti personnel weapons into the ships defensive armaments ? 1. They'd need to stop it or slow it right down without being blown up trying. 2. They'd need to get aboard and stay alive despite its defensive systems. 3. They'd need to get thru its no doubt booby trapped human access points. 4. They'd need to know exactly how to quickly deactivate its drive system and gain control of its specifically designed encrypted networked mechanical operation systems. 5. They'd need to do this without the ship self destructing, frying its own electronics or being blown to bits & sunk by a US missile to prevent it from falling into hostile possession. They'd need to do all this while the US Navy was watching every move and trying every way to kill them ! You guys are talking about it like someone's hot wiring & stealing Bubba's pontoon boat ! LOL

Usually military technology finds its way into commercial and consumer markets. The military is almost always on the cutting edge of technology because of threats around the world that have been around for thousands of years. In other words, they get "toys" first. Your type of thinking is exhausting to say the least, always downplaying threats and maligning those things and people that keep you safe from those threats. If you are so smart, maybe you should start a company and design things like this to accomplish what you think is worthy. You do realize though that something like this costs a ton of money. Hope you got that kind of cash laying around. Have a nice day!

The purpose of making it Autonomous is so it cannot be hacked like a remote controlled vessel. Regarding "frogmen" it wouldn't be of much use to risk boarding it as opposed to just shooting it. It is akin to a satellite in that it simply reports data so other assets know where the potential targets are. Even knocking one out reveals enemy locations.
