An automated gantry system for submerged arc welding (SAW) delivers high-quality results and saves hours on every crane built by WF Steel & Crane.
The Canadian fabrication operation converted to an automated gantry system with SAW, and it's been a game-changer for productivity - saving up to 15 hours on each large overhead crane build. The gantry system - custom designed by LJ Welding Automation - is a twin wire, dual weld head system that includes two Miller® SubArc DC 1000 Digital power sources that use Hobart® filler metals. The easy-to-use system means doubled deposition rates, less rework and more time saved: Previously, a 100-foot beam may have taken 12 hours for welding and four to five additional hours or more for heat treatment and straightening. With the new gantry system and automated SAW process, that same job can be completed in one to two hours.
