Hi there, new subscriber. I was recently in Subotica for two months! I was only supposed to stay for one, but my Airbnb was so comfortable and I was so enamored with Subotica I extended my stay. It is so green! All the beautiful trees in the parks and lining the streets astounded me - and the food - blew my mind! I just felt very comfortable and welcomed there. I ate lots of cevapi and gelato, ha-ha. I want to visit 'Renaissance' if I ever get back there and order their goulash! I ❤ goulash but have only had it in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro. And that bread! It's out of this world! Growing up in the U.S. I didn't learn how much the Balkans were affected by WWII; my education was definitely biased! Thanks so much for your video! It brings back such good memories. 🌳🍞🍜🍦🌳

Hei! To answer your quest: I am from Subotica (Szabadka). Firstly i want to thank you for visiting/promoting my city! There are loads of things more to explore, but if you come for the architecture you did a wonderful and amazing little jurney there. I can recommend you going to Palic next time. Once it was the vacation place for rich people from Subotica to go to weekends, and swim there on the made up lake. There are loads of old, and big villas, everybody should see. Now it is kind of a 'different' town, but many people, including people living in Palic, say that it is a part of Subotica. Hope you had a wonderful time!

Hi, David, from El Paso... so sorry you missed El Paso and Ciudad Juarez when you were in Chihuahua! This is such an awesome video and commentary. Hands down, Subotica is home to some strikingly beautiful architecture. Bravo, mate! Serbia is now on my bucket list, thanks to you! I understand the official language there is Serbian, the only language to combine the use of both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. But, I also understand there are minority languages of Hungarian, Croatian, Bosnian, Slovak, Albanian, Romanian, Bulgarian, and Macedonian. My question to you: With all of those disparate 'boutique' languages spoken there, is one able to get by in English? (I expect one should learn some basic Serbian, though, too... Right?) I would like to learn your response. Thanks in advance, David.

Hi Markas! In cities like Belgrade and Novi Sad there's a lot of English spoken, similar to Riga I'd say and at an excellent level. Even in smaller cities, most younger people at least speak some English. It's definitely not as much of an issue as in Mexico that's for sure! I know basic Serbian as of course much is similar to Polish and Russian, some vocab is even similar to German.

Do not trust the commentators (mostly Croats) who write that Vojvodina "is not Serbia". The name "Vojvodina" means "duchy" and is abbreviated from the original name of that region, which in its full form was "Vojvodstvo srpsko" or "Serbian duchy" within the then Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Croats hate Serbs. Serbs are the only people in the region of the former Yugoslavia who managed to win their own state. All other peoples (better to say all other identities) are the product of the religious conversion that the conquerors carried out over the conquered Serbs (most Croats are descendants of Serbs converted to Catholics, most Balkan Muslims (so called Bosniaks) are descendants of islamized Serbs), and their present nations and states are the product of hostility, crimes and pogroms towards Serbs and were created with the great and decisive help of foreign, mostly western powers.
@davidostrowski679
3 жыл бұрын
I normally just say 'interesting!' to any comment about topics such as this. I always say I'd need a degree in the region's history to fully understand; in fact, I don't think even that would be enough. I was reading something the other day about an independent Vojvodina! Argh!

@@davidostrowski679 People most often associate colonialism with non-European areas, but the tragic truth for us Balkanians is that the Balkans, with all the peoples that inhabit it, have been the subject of colonial manipulations by stronger states. It is the cause of all these divisions and hatred, the old tactic of "divide and rule", so that a single and strong nation could not be created in the Balkans that would be competitive with the Germans, Austrians, Italians ...
@AleksAvramJeff

@@davidostrowski679 In the end of the day, just how other countries came to be is irrelevant here. There has always been a big Serbian population in Vojvodina even prior to that region becoming a part of Yugoslavia which happened after WW1. Is it a surprise that a country loses territory after losing a major war? It shouldn't be. The point is that Serbia has always respected the Hungarian people and vice-versa, and with them all other minorities in Vojvodina and that's a fact since Hungarians are free to learn and use their own language just like e.g. Romanians and Slovakian people that live there and so on, all minorities are free to express their own cultures there. Now why is that somehow to be seen as "not really Serbia"? Otherwise that model is a European standard that is often promoted elsewhere but somehow, whatever Serbia does it always has to have some negative connotation to it.

Hey! I agree re 1 square kilometer (despite doing it myself). I often film multiple videos in one place (although not in this case at the moment), so the first one is normally aimed at central areas. I then venture out to lesser known areas. For example in my Mexico videos, I started off with the typical tourist destinations and 'pretty' areas, then 150 videos later I'm in hellhole run down residential areas no one goes to! LOL. In other words I do plan to be back in Subotica at some point so I can see the rest of the town! Thanks for the great point!

What a delightful city, a must for the travel trail next year.. That synagogue, had me spell bound .How it survived the Nazi era is beyond me?. Thank you David, for highlighting this city to us. Yes.it has a Hungarian -style about it.

Well kind of mixed up the facts , architecture of this city is mainly in austria-hungarian style not a french art-nouveau . Although there is some similar details , this is two different architectural styles in European history . Btw well done David .

I first saw the Synogogue a little over a decade ago when it was in a very sorry state. Until Covid struck, being classed as not fully vaccinated thanks to a still unapproved Indian Batch of Astra Zenica, I have not been on my twice a year stay with what has become my 'other family' in Sombor, just under an hour away. I will return as soon as I am able.

I hope you can get back soon sir! In real time I was in Sombor today (its in 2 videos time). Unfortunately the weather has been diabolical all weekend so it was a bit of a wash out, but I really liked it overall!

@@davidostrowski679 Under normal circumstances I would be coming towards the end of a three week stay in Sombor, looking to make my way to Belgrade tomorrow for a flight back on Tuesday. I so miss one of my favourite places - I just hope that everything is sorted by Easter so that I can visit again. Such a shame that the weather was bad, hopefully you can visit again with better weather, however, I would not recommend doing so on a Sunday, it is so much more vibrant during the rest of the week!

Subotica is a Hungarian city with many serbs and croats that have mostly moved here after the city was attached to Yugoslavia then Serbia (1920). Yugoslav leaders tried to destroy everything that is Hungarian. They have immigrated slavic people and were killing and chasing Hungarians to leave the territory. They have tried also to destroy the old and beautiful buildings (bulit by Hungarian government) and could destroy some of them like baths. Fortunately most of the buildings still exist but only a few of them is renovated.

Gorgeous building of the synagogue. This city contrasts with Belgrade, prettier, though Belgrade does have a grand presence as the important city it has been in European history. My impression is that Serbia is becoming integrated with Western Europe little by little with Arab money, my take, the architecture looks like the communist one but l am the materials are prettier. David l saw in Euronews that 42 individuals from the Balkans who were drug dealers. However Italy has had a mafia problem for centuries, maybe poverty is the common denominator, otherwise excellent work as always.
