Thank you, zionXXI. Here's the translation: I hope KZitem will translate my words. Upham is not a warrior. He is a staff clerk who has only undergone basic training. And it doesn’t even matter whether he knows how to shoot or knows tactics. He is not mentally ready to shoot, because for him shooting is the same as killing. Killing a person who has done nothing wrong to him or is not a threat to him. This is true up to a certain point. Until the very moment when Upham saw how the enemy soldier whom he saved from execution began to shoot at Captain Miller - the only person with whom Upham became close. And at that moment his consciousness changed. This is truly a great moment. Watch this scene again and you'll see what I mean. But even after this transformation, Upham was able to control himself and avoided unnecessary deaths by releasing the rest of the soldiers.

I like to think Ryan and Reiben went home safely and Upham went on to fight the war and that was the reason he was last shown with rifle in hand.

It's an origin story! With that in mind... was there a character in BAND OF BROTHERS that Upham might have inspired? Cheers, Karel

I don’t know why everybody says he’s a coward he isn’t. He is just like every other kid that wasn’t prepared properly and he’s terrified and every single person I come across that says he’s a coward they don’t understand what war is like it is brutal and terrifying upham was going thru shell shock like every other soldier during WWII and so my message towards the people that say he’s a coward there the cowards because they don’t understand war. Because upham is everyone because he represents the loss of innocence in war. Only people that service in the military understand what this character means in war. Again the loss of innocence

The film certainly succeeds for me in giving Upham humanity. Depending on the perspective, this may be read as cowardice. And I agree with you that he is just like every other kid that wasn't prepared properly.

@TheStoryDepartment Percy Commudus and Umbridge in the Green Mile Gladiator and Harry Potter are the more Coward Characters. After they Accept Upham I did feel like he is still unprepared and unfit especially the last battle after they accept him if I was Upham I would warn them about my unfitness.

I agree completely. I think Upham’s story may be the most important in the film.

Nah no amount of explaination will redeem this coward of a character. Let his friend die despite knowing the opportunity to save them. Mostly hid in cover instead of adequately supplying his team with ammunition in time. Murdered an unarmed enemy who surrendered despite all his talking about "losing humanity" The sad thing is the movie is portraying normal people or us viewers as Upham.

Of course, you have a point. I think the idea here is that the character didn't have a choice. In the world of this movie, paralysis is not something you 'will' yourself out of.
