I used to have a pair of Q Acoustic 3050I floor standers. They were very impressive for the price. Actually, they’d have been impressive at twice the price. So, when I decided to upgrade a few years ago, the Concept 500 were the first pair I auditioned. I was disappointed. To me, paired with my electronics, they were akin listening to a medium wave, AM radio. I auditioned them across a number of dealers, paired with various electronics and in varying acoustic environments. They still sounded dull. I eventually settled for a pair of ATC SCM40. Completely outclassed the Concept 500, in my humble opinion.

A great video Thomas...thank you! I had a pair of Magnestand 1.6's (a completely redesigned pair of magnepan 1.6's) incredibly new new crossovers, hard wood frames only original aspect of the speakers were the mylar drivers. I have tried to replace those speakers with a least 3 different high end speakers (Reference 3a's, QLN 3's and Klipsch cornwalls). None of those speakers came close to the beauty of those Magnestands. So the question is why did I part with those magnestands? Two reasons, 1. they worked best in a large listening area (I moved to a very small house) and I was deluded thinking I could get something better! I also replaced my Magnepan speakers with Revel. In my case Salon 2’s. I think it is the Beryllium tweeter that allows the Revel to please a Magnepan enthusiast, where most other box speakers fail to. I have since added a pair of Jim Salk G25 subwoofers to my system, crossing over my Revels to the subwoofers at 65 hz. The improvement now is like comparing a bookshelf speaker to a large Wilson for quality of sound and sheer scale of sound. I know that sounds a bit silly, but adding two premium subwoofers to your main speakers can lead to astonishing results. Jim Salk is quite the genius.

I did enjoy the format of this different style of video. When one hears the hi'fi speaker background of the other guy & then his opinion of these 3 speakers, 2 of which ive heard you review yourself Thomas, it makes a fine 2'nd opinion. Although similarly, i have always found it extremely useful & helpful when you tell us in detail how your own opinions on certain hi'fi... (especially speakers & amplifiers for myself) ...compare to what Mr. Quad, Mr. D.I.Y, Mr Vintage & (is there a Mr. Cantor or Mr. Focal?) ...thinks of the same items that you like & deem worthy for review, i find that a great addition for extra insight (& us all out here) in "What To Buy...Land" & "What Will Suit Me Best...Land" It helps very much because i... (& many others i presume) ....know the sonic traits of each of those other guy's speakers. (Except for Cantors, i"ve never heard any & may very well be getting mixed-up over a there even being a Mr. Cantor, at this moment at least) Also, i particularly found this vid interesting as ive never ever heard any Magnepan speaker, tho ive owned & heard many e/stats & very many vintsge & half-vintage speakers but never a single Maggie & hate to feel i may well be missing out on what might be "just my cup of tea" & i often feel i ought to hear some when i have saved enough money i.e. just before i buy my next & last ever speaker, i dont want price to limit me too much so i'm not quite ready yet, esp' with tons of vintage stuff i keep procrastinating on to sell on e/Bay. But it's fun looking at the possibilities for now. I have my front end inc' Valve pre' & 2 phono stages (Dynavector s/s & a 2 box Icon Audio full valved job) & any one of 4 t'tables / arms & M.C.s that i'll never part with now) ...bar the odd broken M.C. i hope i wont make happen & i only have a possible amp change, just to best suit my last & 'yet to come' speaker whatever it may be. Thd 3 here all look potentially good after hearing 2 of their reviews here. (I dont plan to miss Maggie reviews but seem to do so) except for the LRS up to know. Seem great from your & other reviews providing the amp driving them is great & therefore expensive. Cost of both may be why i wont end up with the LRS & costly suitable amp like a big Mac'.

Wonderfully relaxing video that truly accentuates real human interaction. I too have been smitten by the Sibelius aura through Harley’s and your own videos. To me it’s definitely an end game speaker. I’ve tried and failed to replace my vintage (owned from the beginning 1994) Castle Howard’s since 2007 demoing and listening to countless and much vaunted modern brands including Maggie’s. They have a very similar design principle to the Sibelius and, like the Sibelius, make music sound so naturally real. Unfortunately I’ll probably never hear the Sibelius in person simply because of the humongous delivery charge to the Irish Republic (€330) and same again for the return if I didn’t bite the bullet. I’ve also sent them a few emails and have gotten no response from Harley himself which is very surprising. He must be so busy. Ah well I’m totally happy with what I have and will cherish them until my dying day. This is the thing with British speakers made with human ears, they are so self effacing that you think they will be trounced by more modern designs designed with computers.

It is safe to assert that many differences in choices, preferences, and variegated tastes exists in audiophilia and here is an example of someone who claims that if he listens to a different audio equipment set up, he first needs time to dissociates himself from the bias his favorite speakers inculcated into his senses before arresting the sonic attributes of a difference system deployed is a different space. I would have thought that visiting another audiophile's system composition is a journey introducing another hobbyist's tastes accentuated by many years of evolved searches, experimentation with equipment, rooms, etc. It is not about a comparison with any previous listening session, it is about "what do we have here", now. Any one who spent a day, in a top of the stack audiophile store, with all the rooms set up professionally, would have learnt to switch instantaneously and hear differences if using the same recordings in each room's set up. The reproduced sound will be different in some ways at the very least. Living with Magnapan 2.7QR, 3.5R & 3.6R for over 25 years in different homes in no way would deride what Legacy Whispers, Klipsch Cornwall Versions or Jubilee bring in to the current listening room, and what is of interest will be how those additions excite the room and evince new responses to equipment changes. Just have to figure how conjure up the best of what is on hand, the real challenge.

Is there a cerain advantage in using a 4.5 inch driver in a single driver speaker in Pearl Acoustic speakers. Another question. Similar speakers are PMC bookshelf & tower speakers. I have always heard that bookshelfs sound the best, but in a transmission line, that towers are best. Do you prefer the PMC bookshelf over the towers? It is strange, but it may be good, that the Pearl speakers use a tiny 4.5 in driver in a large cabinet. My theory is that the larger the driver, the looser the sound is, like a flubby sounding subwooffer. I have been telling you for years that my o;der Audiovector bookshelfs 4 inch driver has big speaker sound, the best sounding speakers thsat I have ever heard. For some reason the 4 inch driver makes cds sound like vinyl. Magnepans are the best. OCD hifi guy has a video where he installed a different fuse in a Magnepan that made the Magnepans sound a lot better. That new bookshelf with a 10 inch driver is overated.

I agree with your comment. I never found Thomas only talks of 'positive' aspects of a product he reviews, but instead he's careful to let folk know about those basic sound aspects which many will like & others will dislike. Some like the 'V' 'curve', i like the 'V' curve with a lowered right hand side while far fewer folk like the flat-line accuracy response, there is no "one size fits all" & all good reviewers know this. For a reviewer who's heard the good, the 'just o.k.' & the bad in vintage to the new products at all price points, I think it's good that he doesn't deem products he finds to have too many bad points, to be worthy of a review, & that can only have positive knock-on consequences imo, otherwise it would make him partly a "What to avoid" reviewer" & who's primarily interested in what's bad about a product first? I particularly like the way he gets his friends who have different likes in their own systems & totally different speakers to make comments for which he deems worthy to review & there we can often hear which sound aspects are positive to some folk but negative to others. E.g. On the Sibelius review, i never ever would have imagined that a large & expensive... ($26K + necessary sympathetic $15K amps) ...Quad e/stat lover would ever like the any single driver speaker & that speaks very highly of the Sibelius design to me, after my previous fave' vintage 15" Tannoys bit the dust, i fancy the Sibelius, as i had a love/dislike relationship with previous e/stats esp in bass & dynamics of those i could afford to own . I just need to save some more &/or sell off all my years of stashed post-upgrade stuff that i once deemed too good to sell at the time of upgrade & side-grade (now they all gather dust instead!) e/Bay here i come

@@ThomasAndStereo I definitely don’t find my Kanta’s sharp. Detailed but not sharp. They were on the bright side of neutral for the first 6 months but have since settled into a beautiful sounding pair of speakers after a lengthy break-in period.

@@martindy3 Yes, I like the sharpness of the Kanta too. It;s all relative, put it next to a Sibelius and it will be consider sharp. So if Kanta sharpness is not sharp for you anymore, then the Sibelius will be too smooth for you.

Thomas you are going to need to get John Darko a sample of the TS120. He was talking in his most recent video that he needs to get a tube amp.

Nice video. You just have to hear a system, even if it's good it's a matter of preference still ...Having different perspectives and takes helps though.

Thomas thank you again for your detailed reviews. Would so much appreciate your thoughts on the three amps for the Sibelius style speaker.. any pro's con's would be great to help me choose. WILLSENTON R-800I 300B 845 .. DOGE 10 ... or this TS120? Again any feedback would be greatly appreciated

You have to be careful, are you asking for Sibelius or Sibelius single type of speakers. If Sibelius, the TS120 will smoke all the other amps. If single driver type, you probably be better of with the Willsenton R300 that uses 300b, wait for my review on that.

@@ThomasAndStereo Ts120 huh .. seems like its going to be a while before its available! :) BTW, looked at Sibelius website and they have two versions of the speaker but both are single driver? Which version were you referring to that would work better with the TS120? Thank you again :)

I’m actually thinking of upgrading my Kef Ls50 metas sometime next yr. in my medium/small room which does not suit the Magnepans unfortunately , maybe the Sibelius , well Denafrips just came out with the Poseidons which look impressive , let’s see.

If you like the Meta's brightness, the Sibelius might be too smooth for you.
