Succulents have shallow root systems and prefer soil that well-draining. A loose, rocky soil that is nutrient-rich is optimal. If planting in containers, use a potting mix specifically formulated for succulents and cacti and plant in a pot with holes in the bottom for drainage.
Succulents prefer dry soils with good drainage, so a porous sandy potting mix works best for growing healthy succulent plants.
For the best potting soil for succulents, start with a basic cactus and succulent soil mix, or even an African violet mix, available at most garden centers.
All succulents require at least some level of nutrients in the soil, and while just about every succulent requires fast drainage, pure beach sand isn't going to have enough nutrients for your succulents to grow. This doesn't mean succulents just won't grow in sand, though.
