"The break was final and complete. From that moment on I never heard from Mrs. Pankhurst again and Christabel, who had shared our family life.. became a complete stranger." Personally, I feel so much pain in Emmeline's words when she speaks about Christabel. Putting it all in perspective Christabel would've been in her early to mid twenties when she first began living with the Pethick-Lawrence's so in Emmeline's eyes Christabel despite being the strong, fierce minded and independent young woman she was, would've still have been a child to her. One that she and her husband very clearly grew affectionate towards (and vice versa i'd imagine). So motherly affections I assume would've been very much present within the household over the course of the 5 years Christabel lived with them. The break, as it were between the two families I can imagine was initiated by Mrs. Pankhurst, but i've always wondered was the break so easily accepted by Christabel? Obviously her mother's word was law and as dutiful as she always was Christabel followed suit and never went against her mother. But looking back was the break between the Pethick-Lawrence's and the Pankhurst's easy to follow for Christabel as it was for her mother? or was it purely out of family loyalty to her mother as to why Christabel remained forever distant to the Pethick-Lawrence's? Either way, it was all very tragic to everyone involved. Side note - Serious credit to the actors who did the voice overs. You can feel the weight and impact of every word they speak and how what their reading really meant to the woman who originally wrote them felt. Bravo!
