I always enjoy listening to boxers who are potential opponents of the boxer in the ring. In this case Hearns, criticism of Leonard’s strategy in retrospect, is enlightening. That Leonard left hook, destroyed Hearns when they battled. Leonard was underrated by the boxing aficionado, and the boxing fans loved him. His pity-pat punches were deceiving, like Ali’s right cross. Angelo D, would smirk and chuckle, and his guys usually won! I made the mistake of betting against Leonard cause he wasn’t supposed to be able to stand up against the big hitters. Oscar delahoya for you younger fight fans.

I'll express the minority view here...I thought Baez gave a good account of himself against Hearns for 3 1/2 rounds until he got caught with a perfect right hand. He took some huge punches and answered with some of his own. As Tommy would demonstrate in most of his losing and near losing efforts over the years, when he got hit with a punch that stunned him he broke out in a reflexive grin and Baez caught him with one left hook that he, at the least, felt, grinning as he backed off. He hit Tommy with another clean right hand against the ropes in round 2. At this point, Hearns had never shown the weak chin that would bedevil him over the years so I guess that fact, and his opponent's insane record for a championship fight, explains Albert and Pacheco's disdain for anything Baez did offensively. For 3 rounds, it was not the walkover they were pitching in their blow by blow.
