I managed to get a Suica card at the JR EAST Travel Service Center (Shinjuku Station- New South Gate) which is near the Shinjuku Miyazakikan Konne. They encourage you to keep the card which is valid for 10 years for future use and not to refund when you leave Japan. This will also help with the chip shortage issue.

I'm astonished they don't want to see the entry stamp in your passport - like you do when you buy a 24, 48, 72 hour Tokyo metro pass. I'm wondering why they don't make the Pasmo passport card renewable. Wouldn't that help with the chip shortage? (Unless that card is chip-less, but I think it has a chip). I brought my old one with me on my recent trip, and inquired about renewing, but was told no, single use only.

From several other videos I found out that you can get the 28 day versions of both the SUICA and PASMO cards at the arrival hall at Haneda. Quite a few of these videos also say to top the cards up with small amounts and keep topping them up as you need to, and make sure you spend it all before you leave since there are no refunds. TOICA is available at any JR station so you can get that one the same place as well. And yeah, PiTaPa is impossible to get without both a Japanese credit card _and_ credit history. It's pretty crazy. You don’t need the card, try the app or for iPhones, the iOS wallet. Non-Japanese Android phones don’t seem to work. You don’t NEED a card. It’s more convenient but you can buy the paper tickets. I still do this from time to time. There are also 24, 48, 72 hour passes!

I got Pasmo Passport on February 8 at Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station entrance asking the guy. I then got Suica at Tokyo station JR east travel service center on February 9.

I got a Pasmo Passport at the airport because I arrived there and wanted to use it for convenience rather than deal with buying tickets. It's also a nice souvenir design and like John said " they're cute". I then got Suica so I could have a regular IC card that wouldn't expire if used within 10 years of last use. I plan on returning to Japan within the next 10 years@@lukastemberger

@@neomilk Ah ok, thanks! I've seen people say Pasmo Passport offers some discounts when used in certain places. I guess that would be a reason to get it over Suica... I absolutely want to come again within 10 years, but I won't plan around that since these things change and who knows what we'll be using in a year or two :) It's also easy enough to get a new one when I need it...

I was able to get a standard suica (not welcome) at Shinagawa station on Feb 2nd. I asked for pasmo, but they said they only had suica.

If you live in Japan, you can buy a commuter pass and they will give you a Suica or Pasmo. Or you can travel to Kansai and get a card very easily.

Yes! I didn’t talk much about commuter passes. It’s a different thing and unrelated to tourists but very important to those working in Tokyo, region.

Can you please confirm that child Suica cards are still available? I saw something on the JR website saying that they were available.

For child’s Suica, you can still purchase them at the JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) of JR East stations in the area where Suica is usable or the JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) of JR East Shinkansen stations. Note that because stock is limited, they could temporarily be sold out

Probably no. Only at windows ATM and I didn’t hear about locations other than Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku Tourist windows. Just ask when you arrive :) remember SUICA is only JR and PASMO is the other Tokyo rail networks.

iPhone wielding tourists probably don’t need the physical card, but it’s still useful for foreign Android users. I presume you can still get 2 in 1 regional Suica cards (like TOTRA if you go to Utsunomiya).

It doesn’t let you pay with a Visa card which is the type of card most people have so even if you have an iPhone it might still be useless lol.

I don’t know about Yokohama and cannot confirm the machine do not have them but staff here said they don’t. Check Yokohama Station ticket windows and tell them you’re a tourist visiting Japan - perhaps they can point you to a window with them.
