Covering one of my favorite tunes by one of my favorite bands. Here is my take on the solo from Suicide Messiah by Black Label Society. Zakk Wylde has been a huge influence on me throughout my evolution as a musician. I fell in love with his Ozzy "stuff" right away. I was essentially raised on it! The album "Down to Earth" has a special place in my heart because during that album's press tour is when I met Ozzy at a place called Vintage Vinyl (which has since closed down). Since then I have also fallen in love with BLS. As a guitarist who also sings, I have always looked at Zakk as an inspiration. Stillborn is among the first songs that I played and sang with my band.
Fun fact: I got to meet Zakk at a backyard BBQ for the Rock Photographer Mark Weiss. At the time I was doing yard work as my primary source of income and Mark had asked me to do valet parking with my Uncle. My Uncle having no idea who Zakk was went right up to him and asked "Hey Chief, do you ride?" (he calls everybody Chief). Zakk having no idea who the hell my Uncle was didn't know how to answer the question. My Uncle clarified and asked if he rode motorcycles. I don't really recall what answer Zakk gave to him but it was hilarious. My Uncle also said "That is some beard you've got there Chief" to which Zakk laughed. Me on the other hand, I was beyond nervous to even have my picture taken with him. That was in part due to the fact that I viewed Zakk as one of my guitar gods, but also because he is a human and I didn't want to bother him while he was doing something as normal as attending a BBQ for one of his lifelong friends. To this day it is still one of my favorite memories.
