Summer of '63.......just put the neighbor kids to bed. Decided to turn on the stereo and started looking through record albums by the fireplace. Found an Japanese album by Kyu Sakamoto and played first song. Oh my.....played it over and over. I was 12yrs old and never forgot this song. Today I am 71 yrs young and remember it like it was yesterday.

Couldn't disagree more. The lyrics to this song are first class and totally enhance the singer's performance. I agree that a melody can often be more influential than the words. But, to say 'nothing' to do with language is something that I simply cannot agree with.

When I was watching TV in the evening August 12 1985, suddenly one urgent news flashed on the screen saying that JL123 lost its trace and was missing. After that I was following all the news on all the channels and some time later they started to report that the flight seemed to have fallen down in an unidentified area among the mountains outside Tokyo and published the onboarded passenger list calling also his real name adding that it was Sakamoto Kyu ( we put family name first) ... I got horribly shocked in that moment... he was very popular in Japan and loved by everybody for so many years not only for his great talent as a professional singer & entertainer but also for his nice, cheerful, sweet, kind character and very charming smile which made all of us his fans immediately... I am sure he is still singing this song near God & angels with this same smile...

Kyu Sakamoto was an extremely talented singer and a kind-hearted soul, who became the first Japanese singer ranked No.1 on the Billboard Hot-100 in 1963 (and perished in the crash of JAL-123 in 1985 sadly), but at the same time we must not forget the genius who composed this masterpiece, by the name of Hachidai Nakamura.

Me too,i been watch last night the closing ceremony at the tokyo Olympic games 2020 and they played this song of Sukuyaki song by Kyu Sakamoto. And i take a look here in youtube channel ..and finally i found it. Makes me feel sad to watch this video that now he's gone now.. I never heard this song when i was young due to lack of tecnology here in my home town..Now i'm age of 65..it's makes me sad to watch it even though i didn't understand the lyrics. And he is good looking Japanese man. I'm sure,if he is still aroung in Japan.. Probably he is an old man now.. Sure i am one of his millions fans in this world.R.I.P Kyu Sakamoto.. We never forget you! ❤❤🙏

In the US, "Sukiyaki" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963, one of the few non-English songs to have done so, and the first in a non-European language. It was the only single by an Asian artist to top the Hot 100 until the 2020 release of "Dynamite" by the South Korean band BTS.[7] "Sukiyaki" also peaked at number eighteen on the Billboard R&B chart,[8] and spent five weeks at number one on the Middle of the Road chart, impressive for a non English song.

My mother who passed away at age 92 used to love this song and told me how much she cried when she heard the news of airplane crash in 1985 . all of her friends cried while they watching TV about news of their favorite singer perished in the sky . Beautiful voice , innocent face ~~~~ I believe you are under the shadow of God’s wings forever !!

I love this music, song and the whistling, It was the first foreign song recording to "rank No 1 Charts in USA". Our CHS band played this at half-time performances that year. Its odd though due to USA title version is called "Sukiyaki" The actual Japanese song title is "I Look Up When I walk", but it was too hard to say in Japanese, thus it was re-titled "Sukiyaki" as in USA that was easier to say in Japanese because "Sukiyaki" is a food that is more known and associated with Japan, but has nothing to do with thee song.

That was a wonderful movie. Every movie in the Ghibli catalog is so deceptively simple, yet so deeply evocative. From Spirited Away to When Marnie Was There to The Tale of The Princess Kaguya to, well, From Up on Poppy Hill, and all of the rest. (And did you notice the 'Ghibli' easter egg in Poppy Hill? When the two kids board the ship to meet the 'third man' to find out the truth about who they were, they climb past a steel plate welded to the ship with the logo 'Ghibli.' Made me smile.)

This song was the most popular in Finland abt. 1963-1964 during my early youth. When I was working in Italy we had some lovely people visiting from Japan (happened abt. 35 years ago), we had a last night together all of us and we sang together and had fun. I remember asking our Japanese friends sing Sukiyaki (I was secretly so in love with Mr. Shimo, and I think he liked me, too, but we never spoke about it). We were sitting side by side and Mr. Shimo sang it and I watched the hair of my arm play with the hair of his arm all through the song.. It was such an electric and romantic moment that I'll never ever forget.. the next day they flew away.. Such a beautiful moment between a Japanese man and a Finnish woman:). Songs create so many beautiful moments..
