Unpopular opinion but I prefer this to the live version. It’s so clean and I love the rhythm switch ups

Same here, this original version is so smooth and laid back. The original drummer Pick Withers was a real groove drummer, nice jazzy little flourishes and tasteful playing......the Alchemy version is really 80's sounding and the drumming is too straight and over the top for my tastes.

Thanks so much for all the love you guys! To show my appreciation, I've recorded a solo reaction to the LIVE version of Sultans of Swing from the highly recommended Alchemy performances. I loved this! I will be working to get it edited and out to all of you as my way of saying "thank you" for all the feedback. Be sure to subscribe and hit the BELL button so you can get notified when the video gets released. Keep the suggestions coming!

Mark Knopfler has an incredible ability to effectively play rhythm and lead simultaneously whilst also singing. Most guitarists either just strum or pick in a pattern or drop some licks while singing, but Knopfler effortlessly plays complex combinations. If you watch him on songs like Sultans of Swing his right (non-fret) hand never stops moving.

There is not that much overdub here. David Knopfler (Marks brother) plays the straight rhythm here. But Mark plays also rhythm lead guitar who are a bit different from davids part, and played the licks in-between. Check the live versions how he does that. And yess the Alchemy version is fire! And the Basel 1992 version you can clearly look on his fretboard. like here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1aKos4RtepiAlHo

You might find it interesting to contrast and compare Dire Straits early live performances e.g. from Rockpalast to their later live performances e.g. On The Night from their final tour via Alchemy, Live Aid, Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert. Their early performances with the original 4-piece line up are incredibly close to the album recordings whereas later they added in keys and saxaphone and then pedal steel and integrated them into their older songs too.

Dire Straits are one of the greatest live bands and they are all on the same level, hence brilliant music. Mark, the lead guitarist is rated out of the best 100 guitarists at number 27. Personally I think he is the best and he makes that guitar sing. I have seen them live and it was truly awesome.

On a rainy night in London, Marrk left his hotel and headed to a pub across the street..........the group playing in the pub were called Sultan of Swing........the whole song is a tongue in cheek mocking of these dudes who couldn't play nor draw a crowd..........the Swing part had nothing to do with Dire Straits musical identity.
