This video presents the bells d♭1 -e♭1 -f1 -a♭1 -h♭1 [re♭3 -mi♭3 -fa3 -la♭3 -si♭3] of holy trinity parish church in Sulzberg, Allgaeu region.
➥ The oldest bell in Sulzberg is also the largest bell [1] in the peal. It was cast in 1566 in "Biberacher Gießhütte" bell foundry led by master Joachim Volmer. It had a similarly sized predecessor, also cast by the Biberach foundry, which, however, had become damaged due to an oversized clapper ‘Kall’ and had to be recast. This complete history is immortalised on the bell's striking ring.
After the First World War, all but the largest bell was removed and recast in 1924. However, after this casting was a complete failure in terms of sound, the bells were recast in 1925 with a heavy shape. The smallest bell [5] from this peal is still preserved today.
The war losses were then compensated for after the Second World War with three new bells [2+3+4] from the Gebhard bell foundry. The master chose the heavy shape from the Ulrich foundry like the smallest bell.
To this day, the bells ring out from a huge belfry built in the 19th century. Due to its central location, the large bell is very powerful and dominant. With a little more dynamism, the modern bells could certainly assert themselves better.
