Third of the Superb Sumatra series videoed in 1992, "Home of the Tiger" takes us from huge volcanic Lake Toba in the high central mountains of North Sumatra through the dense mountainous jungle - looking for the last of the rare Sumatran Tigers believed to still survive in the wild - over the jokingly-named Trans-Sumatra Highway to coastal Sibolga ideally sited on the Indian Ocean.
The unending s-bends of the narrow winding road weaving its way through the almost impenetrable jungle and over the mountains to the south coast are a huge challenge for our mini-bus, but the badly broken roadway which descends down the steep scarp to coastal Sibolga on the Indian Ocean is almost beyond belief, as you will see!!
Then, we head south east through many fascinating sights of populous South Sumatra in a mechanically ailing bus, which finally gives up as we stagger to the monument where the "highway" actually crosses the equator!
A welcome sight indeed - but the bus must undergo major heart surgery before we can continue our interrupted journey to exciting Bukittinggi nestling below active volcano Mt Marapi and then down to the coast again at Padang on the Indian Ocean in part four of the Superb Sumatra videos to be uploaded to KZitem soon.
We will then fly to Jakarta to thoroughly explore wonderful Java and beyond. But first - enjoy the rest of the Superb Sumatra series.!!!
