That's right, it is time for our second application out at Boomers house!
So maybe it isn't quite summer yet and I'm doing this slightly prematurely, but I told you all that I would stay on a particular schedule of applying 1/4 pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet every 30 days on this lawn until the end of the season.
For this summer fertilizer application I am using green punch 18-0-1 and N-ext D-Thatch. I am having a lot of fun with d-Thatch on a variety of properties right now. Not only am I taking care of some of the dead grass that has accumulated over the winter, but I am also giving the soil just a little bit of extra sweetness to encourage some higher microbial activity.
I'm sure by now many of you know that the best time to apply the product is when the temperatures are in the 80s. You may have also seen in the past that I have used it early in the spring to help with GREEN UP. Part of this is due to the enhanced microbial activity that happens with the molasses and simple sugars in the material. I've noticed over the years that if I get the product out early my grass greens up faster.
For boomers lawn however, I am using this exactly how it is supposed to be used running at 9 ounces per thousand square feet and putting it over the areas perhaps a little heavier that definitely need more encouragement. The total amount of product to cover his backyard is only 18 ounces, one of the things that I always do is add water to my ortho sprayer to take it all the way to the top. The reason I do that is I like to spray at the full wide open rate on the dial of 8 ounces. It allows me to really dial in my walking speed and make sure I'm getting the right amount of product down every time.
Well this technique isn't really necessary for everyone, I like it just for consistency's sake. I know exactly how long it will take me to cover this lawn and I don't really want to be changing my dial every single time I go out and do it.
As you can see the line continues to fill in very nicely and it is coming along very very well. There are still a couple of weak points that I knew would be more of a challenge. While on the line I discovered that there was an irrigation issue that needs to be corrected. Once that's done, the area that's drying out and stressed will be just fine and we will be back on track for a beautiful lawn all summer long.
Please make sure you give a thumbs up and leave a comment, I love having everyone join in on these journeys and I encourage you to make sure you check and see how this lawn looked when we started and where we have gotten to in only 30 days. It doesn't take long to have a lawn you can be proud of if you put in the work and have the knowledge when you first start out.
