This is THE BEST pruning video for a beginner who feels trepidation about making the wrong cut. You've made me feel invincible and I cannot wait to get out in the orchard and start pruning!

It'd be awesome if you guys went through and made videos out of all these old pruning videos where you have 1 video per plant, and just follow the plant through the seasons and the years talking about which year is which

Thank you for keeping me pruning in the right direction! You have given me the nerve to start the trees out very short. Takes nerve to chop off a baby tree like that.

Spice Z Nectaplum is without a doubt the most vigorous tree in the entire orchard... last year we got a nasty snap down to -20 degrees in december.... NE OHIO and they just couldnt handle it and most of the buds died (on peaches plums pluots pluerry) this year its been more gradual and im hoping i get some flowers and fruit... 3 and 4 years into the ground for all my stuff

Your Splash pluots are so much bigger than mine were this season. I got about 30 cot-n-candy apriums from a 2 year old tree. Best fruit I have ever eaten. Love the videos.

WOW..... A Great Video ! I really like your advice about not overthinking your pruning. I never used to prune my fruit trees and every year I got less and less fruit and some years didn't get any fruit. I always thought it was the weather ! Lousy New England weather...turns out it was just me. I finally got a bumper crop of Mac apples, I heavily pruned this non productive for 25 years tree into a real producer.. the tree can barely support the fruit in places. I've seen the light.. Thank You !

I bought 13, 2 year fruit trees & had them planted in my small backyard in Missouri because of your amazing videos and am looking forward to the first pruning in January. I like your common sense practical approach to your teaching. Encouraging students to be bold and adventurous with the cuts, giving us confidence and taking the fear factor out of the task. What do you spray your trees with when they are dormant? And which pruning tools do you recommend & how do you make sure they are sharp?

If you have a nice low branch, twig or bud that can become the new leader, the best time to chop is during bud swell before leaf emergence aka early spring. I would cut back to 4-5' if you want the final height to be 8-10'. Some tree's regrow vary easily after a truck chop others may not fair as well. For example mulberry, apple, pear, cherry, and maple tree's "back bud" vary easily. This is mostly adapted from bonsai knowledge Dave Wilson Nursery may have slightly different advise.

This is very helpful and timely information. We are in Maine and have your peach, nectarine, plumb and pluots grown in groups of three. They have been in the ground for three seasons and look pretty good but nowhere near the size and vigor of yours. Is it just the climate or is there something else I should be doing. Am I pushing it in SW Maine?

We have what I believe is a plum tree in our back yard. We've lived here three years and the tree was already a few years old when we moved in. Its overgrown but it flowers and gets tiny fruit in early summer but since it's overgrown it does not mature correctly. How can I prune this tree at this time. WE are located in Indiana.

When you prune the fruit tree can you root the cuttings and get fruit from the resulting tree once it matures??

Hi tom Need some advise on my Unhealthy looking Plum tree. I Have a double graft Plum ( satsuma and santa Rosa) and i planted it last year ( sept 2013) and i am raising it as an Espalier. But things ( espalier) is not looking good due to one Graft is too strong ( 4 times Calliper than non strong graft) and other is Sick ( not sure what happened) looks like leaf curl. What i am thinking, is instead of raising it as espalier, raise it as normal plum tree with 2 grafts just like you showed in Video. Currently Both Grafts are approx 6 feet Tall and have 3-4 side branches 4-5 foot long. Strong graft is 4 times ( approx) thicker than the non strong graft. Any idea which is more stronger Graft , Satsuma or santa rosa ? For that i am thinking of cutting off everything above knee height and restart again from the beginning and make my structure of open Vase shape. Will that be ok if i cut it at Knee height now ? I hope i will not kill the tree or reduce Fruit production in coming years? It mid winter here in Australia. Thanks for help and support sandy

For success with any multi budded tree you need to keep the strong variety in check with the weak variety. If you allow the strong to grow unchecked it will eventually take over and you will loose the weak variety. No graft should be allowed to grow any stronger than the weakest variety on the tree. Satsuma is much more susceptible to aphis than the Santa Rosa. What looks like leaf curl is probably aphis damage.

Do you have a video on "understanding your basic structure", I ordered five Dave Wilson fruit trees from Armstrong, but after watching these videos I realize I'm way over my head with this "easy" approach to pruning tree structures, plant spacing and branch training. What might seem so obvious to you is not so easy to anyone who has never seen a fruit tree. Help.

I have a 12 year old lemon tree that I have never worked on...it's spindly, has a few main branches, is about 12-15 ft high in the middle...it produces fruit all year around so that's nice. It's ugly but fun. Can I cut it down to the main trunk again and will it grow new branches?
@DaveWilsonTrees
10 жыл бұрын
You can cut it back as much as you want at this time. If going back to main trunk or lower structure make sure to white was newly exposed branches to protect from sun burn. Do not prune citrus heavy after the middle of September. Right now is the best time to prune heavy and then just pinch tips in September for final structure.
