The Spook Jr. has always been my topwater confidence lure. It's hard to beat. I swap out the hooks with in-line hooks. The stock hooks aren't very good.

I’ve got lots of Skitterwalks and Skitterwal Jr., but have nearly forsaken full-sized Skitterwalks for Heddon’s One Knockers for the clank of the single ball bearing it has, and now really liking the Skitter-V also in the same applications I’d throw either the One Knocker or Super Spook Jr. And along with the One Knocker or Skitter-V as search baits, I also like SheDogs especially of there’s chop. In calm waters, in addition to Super Spook Jr and Skitterwalk Jr.s, I like Heddon’s Spit ‘n Image. I like your counsel about a dark model of any of these (although I need to have reds and specks sell me on chartreuse headed black lures over uniformly dark lures, and I know some like the chart head for angler’s visibility during retrieves), but I can’t imagine launching a wade, kayak or in a boat without some chrome walk-the-dog topwater. I really like solid chrome, but will throw blue backs and black backs in chrome too. There’s few greater thrills than watching a big speck somersault entirely out of the water to pounce on a topwater or seeing that commode-flush swirl of a slot or over-sized red engulf a topwater, and feeling that weight before setting the hook. Fun and informative video, Wyatt, thank you Salt Strong!

Wow! First! After Elsa moves through my area and the water clears up a little I’ll be out working top water almost every day.

Thanks for the video. In the surf of the North East i like to throw the Lil Doc or Doc lure. In the spring the 1 ounce YoZuri Hydro pencil and top knock are and good performers. The Heddon spooks perform well by the schoolie strippers destroy them. They will break stock hooks and pull the split rings out and crack the lure body. I've cracked a few of the YoZuri too but they take a lot more abuse in general.

Wyatt I use the same set up, the Rapala Skitterwalk (Black/ Chanteuse) and the Bone Super Spook Jr. I have changed the Super Spook to the New Moon Walker. Thanks for the summer details on depths.

I just recently lost my favorite top water. It was a silver speckled back with blue top popper that was long like the ones in the video. I would fish it in ponds and by the second or third tug bass would just smash it. It worked really well in the early morning. Even though bass are closer to the pond sides I would cast about 25 feet out and bam.

What’s the best knots to use? A loop or something that draws down tighter to the eye.

Loop knots are always best, not just for topwaters but for jerk baits, twitch baits, and live bait as well. You can tie a uni knot and just leave a loop instead of drawing it all the way down, but one drawback of the uni is when you hook a fish it will cinch down and you won't have a loop knot any more. I've really come to favor the mirrolure knot because it can be tied very quickly and doesn't slip like the uni. Also because of how simple it is, your leader doesn't lose as much length each time you change out lures, which means you can make each leader last longer on those days when nothing seems to work and you keep having to switch lures in hopes of getting a strike.

Also, on loop knots, check them often because that very looseness that makes the lure swing to and fro so effectively can also abraid the loop, which you discover when a big fish or just a cast causes loss of the lure

Since you guys do a lot of testing stuff, I’d like to see a strength test mono vs flouro tested in the same diameter when both are continually stressed and then the weight released with a gradual weight increase each time to see how the flouro holds up. I find that it shatters after repeated stretching vs mono. The mono is more like a rubber band and returns almost to normal and flouro staying in the stretched state. Maybe test both in a normal leader length. Maybe test them in the same pound test also since flouro is stiffer and doesn’t handle as well as mono. Also tested with equal diameters.
