One thing I've noticed when either changing out dirty filter or just pulling the filter to clean it there is always debris left in the pump whether the pump is running or off those debris get back into pool when you turn pump back on. I put a sock over the return before turning pump on and the sock catches the gunk instead of it circulating back into the pool.

I was going to add about putting the chlorine puck right in there but I see someone else has mentioned it. I would not recommend that. If you plan on keeping the pool a while it will kill the pump. Also on the back of that strainer flat (weir I think it's called) I originally threw out that piece of Styrofoam that was on the back of it but I think it's supposed to be there because it's on the parts list " #6) weir foam".

@mazyaj

Hi Tania. I assume your is the 14 x 42" deep. Nonetheless, if its going green, likely not enough chlorine in the water...running the pump mostly all the time costs next to nothing, so I do put a puck in the filter area (some say don't). I also have a floaty with a puck in it, in addition to weekly or (7-8 days depending on the temps) shocking with liquid chlorine (about 3L) for my pool. I put algicide in every week, 90-100ML. I test every few days just to be sure. I'm no pro by any means, but it seems to be working for me... hope this helps. J

That’s too much chlorine for that size pool you could get chlorine poisoning. I use the same kind of chlorine floaty you use and put it on two notches to 2 1/2 notches open.
