Thanks for sharing, Mr. Mazur. This is history at its finest. Just finished Horbein's classic tale for the second time. I implored one of my best friends to read it and she loved it as well. If you're still making trips to EBC in 2024, I'd like to go. It's my goal to either go to EBC, K2 base camp, or do the Annapurna circuit in the next 5 years. Thank you for your contributions to the history and magic of the Himalaya.

I read the book in 1967, as a Seventh Grader in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was enraptured. At 30, I moved to the Pacific Northwest, 50 miles from Mt Rainier where the AMEE team trained. I had two big coincidences happen: I saw a display of Jim Whittaker’s climbing gear at Pacific Luther University, and I actually met the man himself, again as a coincidence, and he took my picture at my request - at over 10,000’ at Camp Muir on the side of Rainier. I am now 66. This book, and movie, remain a part of my life that fills me with admiration and awe for the courage and accomplishment. I want the “last great adventure” in my life to be a trip to Nepal and a trek up to the Everest Base Camp to view and photograph for myself the Mighty Himalaya and Chomolungma. Wish me luck!

Thanks, Dan, for your reply and website link. I have been reading many of the pages this morning with great interest. Right now I am taking walks every day at noon, down and up a nearby hill close to my workplace to get into condition for hiking and more. I’m not ready to go this year; I want to be in good shape so I can really enjoy the experience fully, but I have made a start. Best to you, and I’ll be in touch as my fitness and plans unfold.

It's not everyday that you documentary features Orson Welles. It's not everyday that you pioneer a new route on Everest and survive a bivouac that high. These were the last day of real exploration.

What about Mallory and Irvine who climbed Everest in 1922 dressed only in tweeds and with walking sticks and who probably reached the summit but were engulfed in a mist just a few hundred yards from the top so they were lost from view, and died on the way down. They were simply brave and fool hardy Brits who deserve more accolade than the well-trained and well- equipped American expedition of 1963.

Most experts agree that Mallory and Irvine probably did not reach the summit. The truth is that we will never know.

Why does Orson Wells keep saying Himalya, instead of Himalaya, maybe they were so happy to get him to speak for $7000 that they did not want to correct him, not bad for 3 hours in studio, that's like $55,000 in 2017
@DrLapser

"Himalya" is the way the local people pronounce it. Himalaya is also considered correct in English.

Orson Welles is pronouncing it correctly. The Brits add an extra syllable to 'Himaleje' in much the way they butcher the pronunciation of 'aluminum,' and uneducated Americans follow suit. Orson Welles, being an intelligent man, doesn't care that English speakers butcher foreign words, and gives the word proper respect as he speaks it.

I believe they were sponsored by Eddie Bauer. North Face did not exist in 1963...

They were wearing Eddie Bauer gear: K-6 boots, #088 Mt. Everest parka, Kora Koram sleeping bags and tents, Guide Pro pants, and Wigwam socks. North Face started as a store five years later, in 1968, selling Eddie Bauer expedition gear. REI and Patagonia started off selling Eddie Bauer gear as well, because at that time Eddie Bauer was the only outfitter that sold gear rugged enough for mountain climbing.
