Starting at 4 in the morning, Waste Management - Sun Valley Hauling's drivers hit the road to begin their day of servicing their many customers across the City of Los Angeles. Here is a video featuring their SDO (service delivery optimization) morning launch where all the garbage trucks roll out of the yard. Tons of old trucks in this fleet so it's pretty interesting to watch and listen to the different engines as they pass.
(0:00) - This is the first launch where most of the commercial drivers start. After a morning brief at 4, the drivers hop in their trucks and begin their pre-trip inspection. Once that is all completed, they begin a controlled roll out process, which was really fun to watch. I got to see one of my favorite trucks in the fleet, 203025. Other notable trucks include 206211, an old Baldwin Park Wittke that serviced Arcadia for many years before WM recently transferred it here. You can also see the start up and pre-trip inspection for an old Volvo, 205978, at 8:15 in the video.
(13:04) - Here is the second launch of the day, where roll offs and some of the veteran commercial drivers take off around 5. Smaller launch but you could see the FL drivers test out the arms and all that. It was great to see the synchronized roll out between all the trucks. That old Volvo WXLL was also great to see. It's been over a year since I last saw one of these in action so this was a great refresher as to how awesome these trucks are to watch in person.
(16:25) - Here is a look at some of the new and old stuff Sun Valley is running. They got two old 2003 Freightliner FL112 roll offs from GI, as well as an old Mack MR Wittke from there as well. The Wittke doesn't have adjustable forks, so they are pulling them off of 203027 and putting them on the Mack instead. They also still have 403889, an ancient 1994 WhiteGMC Road Commander that is used as a spare. Unfortunately, not many drivers like using it, and I was told one guy was so short he couldn't even climb into the cab! I stood next to it and wow, was it interesting. The way you climb into the cab is so complicated but obviously very neat. Still one truck I also very much want to film. We close with a shot of my other favorite trucks in Sun Valley, 206688 and 206722, both spares that run very frequently.
By the time the second launch is finished, it wasn't even six in the morning and the entire yard was empty. It's pretty crazy how early these guys start. One great thing about Sun Valley is with all the different haulers located within blocks of each other, you could see a garbage truck from three different companies all on one street!
A huge thanks goes out to Linda Montenegro for allowing my brother and I to check out the launch so early in the morning and showing us around in order to get the best views possible. Another thanks goes to one of Sun Valley's newest employees, Armando Saavedra, for his information on the launch and routes around LA. Hope you like the video bro! And lastly, a big thanks to my brother and dad for tagging along for this crazy early morning adventure.
I hope you all enjoy this video of Waste Management's morning launch. It has been something I have been wanting to see for many years now, and I think I picked the right fleet in order to watch my first launch, especially since there aren't any CNG "Think Green, Think Clean" garbage trucks in the yard yet. Comments on what you liked are always appreciated.
