Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away in May 2021. Let's hear what nuggets of wisdom and information he had to offer us, many decades back, in regard to his criticism of the Tehri Dam in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.
"Why is the Tehri Dam being build? My question is for how long will we get water from the dam? We are told it will be for one hundred years. Will one hundred years be sufficient? Why should future generations also not benefit from something, if it is so useful. The other point is that something that benefits me should not cost you. A dam cannot be built just anywhere. The people who live here - should they not progress? What sort of progress is this that benefits some and pushes others out of their homes and villages?"
"The most dangerous matter is that the Tehri Dam is being made in an earthquake prone zone. The dam makers say that the dam will withstand any sort of earthquake. But these are brittle mountains that keep moving and the rocks and bedrock keeps shifting. What if a large number of rocks fall and damage the dam? In one incident, the dam was strong but the rocks and landslides that fell and filled the dam did downstream damage of an extensive fashion..."
"One needs water forever. Not for one hundred years only. We need permanent solutions. We need permanent dams. Those are Himalayan forests. Where there are forests, the river's flow does not get affected."
