I can see why you work by yourself; you would drive a shop foreman absolutely crazy with your "I care about this job never coming back on me, so I am going to do it right, like it or not, I don't give a damn about shop time allocated'. Both my grandsons are heavy diesel mechanics, one in Alaska and one in Arizona. I have suggested they subscribe to your channel and learn how to do it right the first time. You and Jeff Anderson explain in detail why or why not. They want to me mechanics not plug and pull pundifs. Keep it coming brother, young and old out there need your stubborn sticktoitness more than ever.

That table is not flat enough, get a glass plate
@Tafs315
3 жыл бұрын
Well, I hate to tell you this BUT! you're not working on a flat surface... Yes, it looks flat but is not. You need a 1/2 sheet of glass that is the same size as your sandpaper. or use the Metal Lapping sets. They both work to get a precision lapping on any metal surface AKA what you are doing.
@pootthatbak2578

I didnt want to say it. But this guy is an artist. He knows his situation, im sure he does. He doesnt show everything..he probably checked the flatness before hand with a straight edge
@Tafs315
3 жыл бұрын
@@pootthatbak2578 Even a Flat Edge is still not precision flat. Doing anything with the wrong oil also makes it uneven. When you working with tolerances you need to have the right lapping gear plus The oil for that. Especially with pressure going through that area. That way they have built-in tolerances so these areas work as they're intended. As a designer of this type of system, I understand when I design it what my minimum and maximum tolerances are. you can not be an artist and go on a whim of certain items. These are your trainee and why we use a certain tool to make sure that we have it spot on. When the proper tools are not used you will certainly have a failure when interns cost money to fix. Doing a job right the first time is always the correct way. Going back to your customer and telling him you made a mistake will lose their trust in you and make them have doubts about your past workmanship.

Hey, I enjoy the videos. I work up in the oilfields of northern Alberta. We have Chevy 350 small blocks driving hydraulic pumps, with 1” hydraulic hoses run out to turn the top drive on the oil well. One year we changed so many pumps that failed, it filled a 40 yard scrap steel bin so full, the truck couldn’t lift it. We actually had to hire a crew to come hand bomb a bunch out of the bin so it could be loaded. Lol. Anyway, cool videos.

Warren... If you do much of that get you a small granite bench top surface plate from one of the supply houses. They are relatively cheap and work really well for small parts lapping. I have a 24x24 in my shop.

You have a pump and a motor per side. That's for the public. Each pump and motor has 2 plates and the cylinder block both plates and the cylinder block has to be lapped on a lapping machine ( 24" spitfire machine ) . right side is weak that makes both pump and motor has to be rebuilt. 2 plates on the pump, 2 plates on the motor plus the 2 cylinder blocks for both pump and motor plus rebuild seal kits for both. I'm putting it this way for the public's understanding.

I used to work in a turbine engine shop and would lap the carbon seals and seal runners. I found a handy tool to be a granite surface plate. MSC supply has an 18 x 24 x 3 inch thick plate for around $210.00 and I'm sure there are many other suppliers of these granite plates. This plate is flat to within .00015 (tool room grade B) and is normally used for inspection purposes but are really flat for the cost. A human hair is generally .003 inch diameter so .00015 is super flat.

Hi. I'm Mark. I've rebuilt many of these over the years. I have found that it really helps to make a hole in the table close to the edge. When you hit 40, give or take 5 years, the muscles in your eyes start to become less elastic. They won't pull in to focus like they used to. It's called Presbyopia.
