This is our videographic send-off and final farewell to the legendary Shaw Studios.
---
Nearly everything you see in this video has been demolished and lost to the sands of time. The site was once home to the legendary Shaw Studios, which played a pivotal role in the development of Hong Kong’s film industry. The massive movie studio complex was built in 1961 and operated by the Shaw Brothers under the guidance of the late Sir Run Run Shaw. It was known as Movietown and was once considered to be the world’s largest movie production studios.
After World War Two ended, Sir Shaw spotted a potential market in the local film production business in Hong Kong. He set up this local studio which soon found itself at the apex of the tide of what many called the ‘Golden Era’ of Hong Kong cinema.
Movietown was a living entity. The huge facility was fully equipped to produce all manner of films. In the early 90's the ‘Golden Era’ of Hong Kong cinema fell into decline and the number of productions dropped considerably. The last solely-produced film from the site came out in 2003
and it fell into decay - along with Sir Shaw's luxurious villa.
Movietown fell into decay. Even its Grade One Historical Structure Classification was insufficient to protect it from the wrecking ball. Most of it was demolished in 2021 - destroyed along with the public’s faith in Hong Kong’s commitment to historical preservation.
