The US underestimated Aydid. Aydid had been educated at a military academy in Moscow, and he learned about the tactics the Mujahideen used to devastating effect against the Soviet in Afghanistan, particularly by shooting down their helicopters with RPGs and Stinger missiles. His militia were ordered to shoot down helicopters because the Americans would not abandon their men and this would trap them in the city were the militia could overwhelm them with superior numbers.

They made them slow on purpose so the audience understands what they're looking at.
