I used to do aquaponics on Maui. I had about 6 systems running of different designs. I used tilapia and cinder grow beds that became my bio filter to clean the water and the fish excrement went to feed the plants. I've moved to Virginia now and built a duck pond. Of course with nothing but water and duck doo doo, it's a green mess. I was looking at using an air lift pump for the water, but decided a decent pump off Amazon would be easier with a head height of about 16'. It's been a few years since I did any filters, so I'm surfing your ideas and others. I'm a scrounger whenever possible, so I will use materials I've collected. Probably a 50 gallon plastic barrel with all the bio media inside. I also have a large old pool sand filter and may insert it inline too. Cleaning water from my ducks and geese is a fairly major task, but I hope to make it work. Nice video you out together here.

I wanted to say THANKS Braddah Mel! This inspired me to build a 125 gallon indoor garage pond for my 2 Oscars useing this same spill way and this same method. I spent very little money on this pond. I haven't got it running just yet as I'm waiting for the pump and some other things but I'm sure my Oscars are gonna love it.. I just recently got these 2 baby Oscars (1 Colombian Oscar, 1 tiger Oscar) I'm having some aggression from the Colombian to the tiger Oscar and am hoping that once I put these 3” Oscars into the large pond, just maybe there aggression with smooth its self out with the amount of space, you may have some more experience on this then me and is my 1st time keeping Oscars. So I value your input/ knowledge. Thanks and ALOHA 🤙

I put together one of these but I didn’t get one of the sponges so I used lava rock in the bottom. I will get one of those sponges next time I go out. But just adding the falls to my pond has made a tremendous difference in the water clarity. That little extra filtration is really doing it’s job. I want to add a bog filter to my pond as well. But at the rate I’m going it’s gonna take me 10 years to finish my pond lol.

Thanks for this video. It worked almost *perfectly* for the little 50-gallon preformed pond my wife wanted for the corner of our yard. I originally had all the same filter media but in a submerged solid basket with the pump at the bottom. It would suck the water down through the filters and then pump the clean water back out. With your great spillway filter idea, I was able to free up all that space and move the filters outside the pond leaving only the pump inside. My algae problem is gone, the water is crystal clear... nice aeration from the waterfall, easier to clean, etc. The only problem I have now is that the pump clogs weekly. I have a square of 35 PPI filter over the pump inlet, but I have to clean it weekly or the waterfall slows to a trickle.

@@HaYNFishKeeper That's what I was thinking too, so a while back I searched for "mesh pump bags" on Amazon, but they were all those 12" - 15" drawstring jobs... huge for this tiny pump. I freed up all that space in this tiny pond... I didn't want to fill it back up again. Your link to eBay helped me find the much smaller ones, so I guess I needed to include the word "zipper" in my search. Thanks again.

Thanks so much!! I tried this and its amazing. i used a bag of activated carbon instead of the media you used and it works very well in addition to my pond filter, I might not even need the pond filter now this idea seems to remove more gunk than the filter.

I'm starting out with a 35 gallon outdoor pond . 3 Butterfly Koi and 4 small Orandas . All is good . Still learning but all is going very well and the fish are starting to grow , good color too . Hopefully I can send you a pic and give me some advice

Ricardo Guevara first advice need to go bigger with that many fish especially 3 koi they produce a lot of waste that will mess up the water quality very fast🤙🏽🤙🏽

Video seems to be for people who already do some type of filtering. For a brand new person to the hobby, its missing the pump, which pump types, what flow rate, how does the inlet look like?
